I am in need of some form of bedroom storage for my long guns but am divided on getting either a nice display cabinet or a simple vertical rifle rack. The wall which I intend to use has exactly 55 inches of width and the ceiling is 8 feet tall. I live in a nice neighborhood and have no children in the house, so locking the unloaded guns up isn't necessarily top priority. In the event that I did need to lock my weapons up, I have an old 12 gun safe in the garage that is currently empty.

I want something that will look good but at the same time be as inexpensive as possible since I am on a limited budget. I did find several web sites selling 12 gun display cabinets from $500+ but that is a little outside of what I want to spend at the moment. I am still expanding my collection and I'd rather make a large investment in new rifles rather than spend it all on the cabinet.

This is essentially a temporary storage option for my small collection until I graduate college and get my own place where I can both have room for and afford something more substantial.

This is one of the inexpensive cabinets that I have found so I'd like to hear if anyone has experience with them, has seen them, or if you have any general opinion of the concept etc.

Walmart has this exact one for $114 and they will ship it for free to your local store where you can pick it up. My local Dicks does not have any of these in stock and they will not ship to the store and instead make you order straight to home. This normally wouldn't really bother me but shipping is like $50-60+ which is enough to send me to Walmart.

Well I hate to give in but the safe is the way to go.  The days of closets, gun racks, and glass fronted gun cabinets are over for me.  Guns are big targets of thieves, no two ways about it.

Break ins are all too common.  I wish thieves would die of a painful cancer that rots their eyeballs out of their head and their hands rot off their arms and leaves them alive for several years in horrible pain.

Buy at least a metal homak, they're hardly a real safe but are more resistant to a smash and grab.

I agree with a need for a safe generally.  It kind of depends on the crime rate in your area.  If you put them in a glass front cabinet, I would put them somewhere more secure when you leave for weekends or longer.

I live smack in the middle of a nice neighborhood at the bottom of a downhill cul-de-sac so the last house that somebody would break into would be mine.  I have that empty safe in the garage to make use of if I go out of town, but I am home at night about 99% of the time. We also have ADT with 16 security zones.

I was hoping for something that would display my small collection but if everyone recommends a safe I might just do that.

Thanks for the input!

I built the first wall rack from this page in my closet and it looks really nice.

well as stated above , safes are best.

at the moment I am constructing a ....safe room/bunker if you will.  Steel door, stone walls (basement room surrounded by foundation on 3 sides).  Will install motion detector with local alarm.

yeaaaaaa, it will be much more secure
