That's true, he does recommend spacers to take the bind off the barrel. But he only does this as an alternative to relieveing the wood on the handguard. The K31 and it's sniper variant, the ZfK55 sniper rifle use the same bedding system on a very similar action. The ZfK55 is set up with a free floated barrel as standard configuration. The reason the K31 is set up with the forestock and handguard compressing on the barrel at the front band is to give the front of the rifle rigidity to handle the rigors of mounting and using a bayonet with the rifle. Not for any accuracy treatment. The treatment given to the K31's in the article above does nothing but systematically stabilize a very good bedding design.
