All that I've seen is speculation.  After you get it give us a shooting report.

Search the gun auction boards for an Iranian Mauser. They're 8mm, have the short barrels, and they are the REAL DEAL. Most I have seen are in pretty good shape as they were never used much.

They were on sale here a couple of weeks ago at the local Dunham's for $299 a friend of mine bought one (the only one the store had) and it is a thing of beauty, only one problem, it shoots very high at 100 yards, and kicks like a mule with 198 grain Yugo ammo. having said that, and compensating for the point of aim, used as a deer rifle and shot little, it will make for a nifty brush carbine. My friend may scope it.

A 16 inch barrelled 8mm Mauser is not my idea of a fun shooting rifle.  I would think the thing would kick like a mule.  And the muzzle blast would be enough to part your hair.  Fun for a mag or two but after that and you'll be flinching like a heroin addict going thru withdrawal.

Though it may not be an 8mm, but 308, look a the Spanish FR8 SPR.  They have an 18" barrel and are good shooters.

huge thread ressurection, sorry

just got one about a week ago (gift). i wouldn't pay the $500 for it, but it was a blast to shoot. mine's the 8mm which together with the short barrell makes for a shitload of recoil, and accuracy when shooting over 200 yards isn't a strong point. i like it a lot more than i thought i would, but paying $500 for a mauser of any kind is a little crazy. fun little rifle though, would never consider it as a SHTF weapon, even as a backup.
