Just picked up a mitchell sales M48 for my 14 year old a couple days ago.   First off, it wouldnt fire some of my surplus 1919a4 linked 8mm.   It had a few light strikes.   After a few rounds from the box of ammo from mitchell it started hitting harder and running right with the linked stuff.   When I got it home from the dealer I sprayed disc brake cleaner in the bolt and the thick goo ran out of the bolt.   I suspect this was slowing up the firing pin or ?   Also it had difficulty ejecting when we were firing but after de gooifying the bolt it ejects better too.

This is our first C&R rifle, overall I'm impressed with the M48 as a very useable and handy rifle that has a respectable punch.   The long eye releif scope mount offered by mitchell is damned overpriced though.   Are there other options without having to make any permanent modifications to the rifle?

My son loves it, and I'm thinking I might want to buy another for a truck gun.

Any positive/negative reviews of the M48 online?

Bolt strip/assem inst on right.

I went with a Microclick rear sight from mojosights.com for mine. Works way better than the V rear for me, and is easy to adj for any range and surp load combo you use later. One sight works easily for Rem CoreLokts, heavy Yugo, light Turk, light Romy...

I have tried scout mounts on other surps, like the quality of the Darrell's Mount from milsurpshooter.net, but find the very narrow field of view from fwd mounted scopes to be a challenge.

I wont be doing it on this one, it's my son's and he wants to keep it stock looking but when I buy one for myself can I just drill/tap the receiver and install weaver bases?

Sure.  You will need to do something about the safety and bend the bolt handle even more though.

Glad to see you like your m48. I love mine. Look at surplusrifles.com, they show the Iron elite scope mount on the m48. Only mod you need to do is remove the rear site and replace with the mount. It means removing 1 pin and you can reinstall the original site if you decide to sell the gun.
I plan on tring to get this mount when I have the funds.

If you go the drill and tap method you will need a Beuhlar(spelling?) safety and you will need the handle modified to clear the scope. The new safety puts the lever to the side for scope clearance. This method works great(I had a swedish m96 mauser with this setup) but after getting the parts and paying the gunsmith the price was about the same as the iron-elite mount.

good shooting.

Sounds like you have cosmoline in the bolt. You need to strip it down completely and clean good. Wouldnt hurt to strip down the whole rifle and make sure mitchell got all the cosmo elsewhere. Get the iron elite scope mount. It allows you to use a regular eye relief scope without any permanent mods to the rifle.

I've got one and it's a real solid rifle. Although I haven't shot it much, I have the same problem with the firing pin. I took it all apart and it was full of nasty crap. I haven't shot it since I cleaned it, but I'm pretty sure that was the problem. Here's my topic where the people helped me figure it out ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=6&f=14&t=187555

Oh yea and just like the instructions say, DONT use your wifes dinner table with the firing pin. It WILL leave a nice mark. I used MY dinner table and just gave it some character

Are you using a pistol scope or other long eye relief scope?

I just have not found this to be true when it's installed correctly.

I have 3 M48As.  I love them.  Very accurate, nice shooting, much easier on the recoil than my Nagant.  One is from mitchells, the other two from a local dealer.  Always clean out the Bolt before firing.  Good idea to bring a towel to the range since the rifles sweat cosmo as it heats up.  I tried the scope mount from Mitchells and noticed it stripped out right away.   eventually I will find one that does work, wont be a mitchell mount that's for sure.

If you have the time and patiene to do so, I reccoment a detailed stripping of your M48. I have an M48 (also from mitchells). And at one point I was so tired of cosmo leaking out when it heated up that I put a movie on and spent an afternoon stripping it down and getting the cosmo out of everything.
