Anybody get a 1903 or a 1903A3 Springfield from the CMP lately?     I'm curious about their condition.

To be honest I already put my application in the mail this morning and put in for one of each (1903 & 1903A3) rifle. The reason I didn't ask before mailing the application is I didn't want to change my mind. But, I am curious as the condition of the rifles the CMP is currently shipping.
I appreciate any comments on these rifles.

I also put in for 2 Garands. One service grade Springfield and one field grade Springfield. Can't wait. Of course if I had sent my application in a year ago when I decided I wanted a couple of these rifles I would already have been shooting these rifles for months.

Now the wait begins.

They are covered in lots and lots of Greece grease.

It probably won't be pretty, but it will be a good shooter.  The barrels are usually like new. The wood is usually pretty rough.  Some folks luck out and get a real looker.  Luck of the draw.  You will have some cleaning to do, but that's half the fun. Good luck.

Hit & miss, that's what I thought it would be. Can't be any worse than the 6.5mm Carcano I got last year.

Well I got my 03A3 last year, but just to show you how they look when they arrive... lots-o' grease! But at least in my case, there was a real gem underneath all that goo.

LoL, I was a bit daunted when I first got it. But I put on some gloves and went at it with mineral spirits, rags, and a toothbrush. It took me an afternoon, but I got it cleaned up.

For 420 beans it's one of the best deals I've ever got. All new greenish park'ed, minus the front barrel band, which was still excellently blued. There were 2 or 3 stock cartouches still left as well. Action runs like butter.

As for cleaning, mine came covered in cosmoline as well. Get very hot water and run it through and over the parts, and it will melt away. I did mine in my bathroom sink, which pissed my GF off to no end. Cleaned and oiled, she looks excellent and runs excellent. I think that it might be my deer rifle this year.

I've been seeing them in gun stores for $400 and up so as long as its in 70% or better shape I'll be happy. Of course not as happy as I'd be if it showed up better than 85%.

Can't wait, hopefully they'll be here before summer arrives.
