This was my first C&R purchase (it was a slippery slope-many since then). Milsurp ammo shoots about average in this rifle. Prolly 'bout 3-5" groups @ 100 yds (with iron sights). Last fall I loaded some ammo for it and was pleased with the results, but these ol' peepers just aren't what they used to be, knowhutimean? So, I put a scout mount on it and tried it today with the same handloads. Wooohooo! I'm a likin' it! The lands are somewhat worn, and I think that the bullets I'm using give somewhat better purchase, being .312 diameter. Well here's a pic of the result, and of the rifle.

My M-44 shoots a nice 2 inch group at 100. (off the bench)
Except that it's about 5 inches to the right of the point of aim.
Will get one of those front sight tools one of these days...

I'm about to get a muzzle break for my M38, I put a recoil pad from academy, it really helps, hope this muzzle break helps even more, I'll be out there all day!

I wonder what kind of range these have compared to the 91/30.

How are you able to see through that scope with it mounted that far forward?

Scout scopes are typically mounted on the rear sight base.  Is there something there that I'm missing?

I didn't understand it at first when I saw a scout scope.  It has a long eye relief, that focuses when your eye is farther away, where as a regular scope, you have to be much closer to get the entire field of view.

Yep, it's a Leupold M8 IER 2.5X Scout scope. IER=intermediat eye relief. I added the cheek pad to get good scope alignment with a cheek weld. I found this setup to work very well, both offhand and from the bench. A scout setup also allows me to keep both eyes open and have a quicker target acquisition. IMHO, it's tough to beat Darrels Scout Mount for a rock solid mount and no permanent alterations to the rifle.

I've also heard that pistol scopes work OK for this application. Or, a red dot would work.

Oh, ok I didnt know it was not a standerd scope. Yes that would be nice with a red dot scope.
