I have been looking to get a nice lever action rifle to play with. (Simply to enjoy!)

I know that 22 isn't the sexiest lever action to get, but I really want something I can take anywhere and shoot for hours!

Anyone have any negatives about these? I really like the Henry 22's and probably what I am leaning towards...

I had a nice Ithaca model 72 .22 lever, I loved it, it did not have the "moving" trigger like the brownings, it worked like a real honest to goodness lever gun

No negative comments from me on them, only positive, they are dang fun

Marlin has a beauty. I Forget the model, it shoots short, long, long rifle 22's. I think it was a take down. Almost 500 bananas.

Good choice GB . The Golden Boy(I've seen them for around $320 at shows) is a real beauty and it's sweet and smooth shooting. You'll find cheaper lever actions but they won't be as sweet. Plus the Henry Rifles are made in NY .

My daughter loves her Winchester 9422

The Henry is just as good but without the name or the price.

I've got a Golden Boy and it shoots great. For the price I'm really happy with it.

Oh ya go here, www.outdoor-catalog.com/knife/peep_tang_sights.htm
They have peep tang sights for the Henry.

GB:  The Henry has the classic straight stock which looks/functions great in a lever.  I have the Winchester in 22 mag and love it!

I think the Winchester 9422 is the best of the lot, but the Henry is a great buy for the $$. It's got a few plastic parts, but it's a good sturdy rifle.
It'll function with 22lr, 22long, and 22short. It'll hold something like 21 of those powderless Aguila Colibri rounds, too, for some almost silent plinking.

I'll check both of them out again and depending what I can find at the Albany fun show (NY gathering in a few weeks!), I will probably try to pick one up. [=)]

I may look for one of those MG42 kits for the 10/22... they're kinda expensive, but would make a real nice looking .22 to play with!

Another vote for Winchester 94...

The two my father has (in 22lr and 22mag) are very reliable, and awesome to shoot...

I have all three in lever. My rateing is Marlin golden 39a tops, winchester 9422 fairly close second, Henery, just ok. but by far my favorite is my Winchester 62a pump inherited from my grandfather. It is over 50 years old, shoots great.... fullclip

Yup, I'd go with a pump .22 also. They are fast, fun and hold a bunch of rounds. Taurus make the M72, a copy of your 62a. Fun plinker.

Buy a Ruger lever gun in 22 mag.

The best of both worlds, its cheap to shoot and has a little more power than the standard 22LR.

Cheap? I don't think $7.50 for 50 rounds is cheap! Shit, I can shoot 45 ACP for 50 cents more a box! 22WMR is not cheap...
Also, 22 WMR has the same energy at 100 yds that a 22 RF has at the muzzle. Thats more than a "little" more power than the 22RF.

GB - got the lower end Henry lever for my son.  Shoots decent.  Gun scrubber will take the finish right off if you're not careful.  Had some trouble with the pin that hold the loading tube in place coming out, but was easy to fix.  I'd probably spend a little more and go with a Ruger or Winchester if I had it to do again.

'Nother vote for the Marlin 39A! Great guns, just need to save some more bones, they're about $375 dollars.

The incomparable Marlin Golden 39A (along with the 1897T) represents the oldest shoulder firearm design still being made anywhere in the world. In fact, the 39's great grandfather, the Model 1891, was the first repeating rifle to be chambered for the 22 Long Rifle cartridge. And over the years, Marlin 22's have become legendary among people who know rifles. The fact is, the Model 39 is still the standard by which all other 22 sporting rifles are judged. Understandable when you consider the clean, flat, solid top receiver, and an action machined from solid steel forgings, which are then heat-treated for greater strength. The Model 39A also features a rebounding hammer, a hammer block safety, and it disassembles in seconds with only a coin. And the stock is crafted from genuine American black walnut and features fine cut-checkering. Thanks to Micro-Groove® rifling, a special process that produces less bullet distortion and a better gas seal, the 39A gives you the kind of accuracy most other 22's can't touch.

Marlins "Cowboy" is a nice gun too, but it's about $500 though.

The authentic look of the Old West and the economy of 22 rimfire – our Model 1897 Texan has a heap of good things going for it. For low-cost practice, Junior Cowboy Action events, varmint control and just all-around fun, this slick-handling take-down 22 lever action can’t be beat. The 20" tapered octagon barrel features Micro-Groove® rifling for the best accuracy ever with 22 Long Rifle, Long or Short cartridges. The straight-grip stock is genuine American black walnut, and the carbine-style fore-end is capped in blued steel. Sights are an adjustable Marble semi-buckhorn rear and carbine front sight with brass bead.

Ok slacker you are a fuckin genius.

The only .45 ammo you can get for $7.50 is wolf and wolf is only good for an AK. 22 mag is plenty cheaper at 7.50 for a hundred. If you cant afford that then go shoot your BB gun.

The 22 mag is by far a better plinker with a bit more power than the standard .22.

Fucking gunius huh? Don't we both wish.
The cheapest box of 22 WMR that
Midway sells is $6.08, for a box of 50
Where did you get the $7.50 per hundred figure?
Please, do tell.
I don't debate that the 22 WMR is more powerful than the .22lr. I thought I made that statement in my original post.
A better plinker...well, thats got alot to do with how much $ you want to spend on rimfire.
I have both the WMR and the LR. I shoot the LR more because of the cost and distance that I shoot at. Over 50 yds I prefer the WMR, under 50yds I like the 22LR.

Wolf's only good for AK's huh? That statement alone really shows your wisdom. I'm sure your opinion is very highly regarded in your circle of friends.
I'm going to go shoot my bb gun now...goodnight.

maby its just me,
but if its either a marlin or winchester 22 lever gun and not at least 40 years old or more it just looks kinda odd.

Imo if you looking to fix a scope to that rifle id recomend somthing with a side ejection.

But anyway ive not heard one negative comment on the henry. Unlike winnie's and marlins.

I personaly own a 39a marlin lever made back somtime in the early 60's. its a whicked accurate shooter on paper and critters

But if you interested, winchester just came out with a brass framed "yellow boy" 94/22.
Its somthing that will definately get a look or two.

The Browning BL-22 is also a reliable, pretty accurate gun, but with my aging eyes that tiny, blued, front sight is hard to see.  Most of the 22 lever actions are unbelievably light in weight.

GB, If money in no object the Winchester 9422 or the Marlin 39A is the way to go. If you do not want to spend much the Henry is fine.

One fun gun that is overlooked is the Remington .22 #572 Fieldmaster pump. It is a full sized rifle and has a tubular mag under the barrel that holds long rifles, longs and shorts. A very good looking rifle. List price $392.00. MIKE.

My pop has a older vintage one. It was one of my favorites rifles growing up. Beautiful wood and deep blue finish. Too me this would be something worth keeping, other than a Henry. Although the Henry makes a good beater .22.

I have a LNIB Ruger 96/22 I would let go of. I bought it for one of my son's for Christmas a couple years ago but he wanted a 10/22 instead. I can't remeber if we ever even shot it. Uses 10/22 factory and aftermarket mags, slings, sights, barrels and is a really nice rifle. Let me know if interested, I'll give you a good deal

Ok Slacker you win does that make you feel better. I bet in your circle of friends you are hated and ignored, why because you are know it all. Sound familiar?
My initial post was only to help Goat boy make a selection on a .22 lever gun and not to be picked apart or attacked by an A-hole like you. Why don’t you take all that self-hatred and use it constructively or why don’t you figure out that a post is nothing more than a thought and is very difficult to defend on a forum.
I bet you feel superior because you can win on a gun board.

Don’t bother responding, why don’t you just leave it alone and take the post for what it is worth.

I've got an old Erma .22 lever action, I'm told the Henry is based on this design. My Erma is a great shooter, very accurate. If you find one at a gun show I'd snap it up.

So now your saying that 22 WMR ammo isn't $7.50 a hundred? What about Wolf ammo? Is it still only good for AK's?
Take this for what its worth:
