Is there anything I can  do to make my 10/22 or M&P 22.   Cycle bird shot.

Even if you could, you don't want to shoot birdshot from a rifle barrel. You'd end up damaging the rifling and wondering why you weren't shooting a shotgun.

Are you talking about the CCI rounds with the really small shot in them?

I'm curious about bird shot out of a short .22lr barrel, how would it do?

I'm using a Kennesaw Cannon Company .22lr sub caliber insert for my German 26.5mm flare pistol.

Don't want to damage the rifling, but if the birdshot is useful, it could be handy in my flare kit.

While this may be true for shot from a rifled slug barrel on a shotgun (I'm not a shotgunner), the CCI shotshells for pistol/rifle won't harm the rifling in your pistol/rifle/adapter.
On another note, the .22 shotshells are almost worthless unless you are a foot or two from the target.

For the most point they are useless. I have some for my NAA mini revolver for snakes. They probably only spread about a half inch 4 feet from the barrel, so its not much different than shooting a regular .22. I would think that anything past about 8 or 9 feet wouldn't even know it got shot.

Its almost completely useless

An entire 20rd CCI box fired into an ampty shotgun shell box will produce 1 shotgun shell box with a thousand little dents all over it

Almost useless.  Almost...

Test fired on a pop can at 10'.  Several dents and only a few holes.
It will kill a bird at about 4' through a 24" scoped rifle without hurting the copper water line the bird is standing on.

I like bird shot for shooting inside the pole barns,   It won't dent the siding or roof metal.  , I just need a faster follow up shot than a bolt action rifle will give.

I used to kill pigeons for my aunt in her horse arena...  I would throw rocks at them until they landed on the steel rafters, then shoot them with a suppressed 22.  The bullet would go through the bird and smack the rafter, but not damage anything.

I use the .22 birdshot rounds to deter stray dogs from getting in my trash cans.  It works well for that, the bang scares them and they get a bit of a sting. They usually don't come back for more.

I used to use it on wolf spiders in the window wells.  They go "splat", and leave nothing but a smear and a couple of twitching legs.  The individual BBs don't have enough mass for a ricochet to break the windows.

They will also take a snake's head off from close range (also in the window well).  It was more impressive than I was expecting.

Those were all 8" to 12" from the muzzle.

From 10 feet away, the little pellets will not penetrate through drywall.  It's also pretty darned quiet when shooting from a rifle.

The 9mm ones cycle my glock 19 most of the time

The spread from a 10/22 at @ 200 ft. is probably est. @ 50 ft. wide iirc (it's been a while ) and won't hurt your barrel.

I used them to dispatch rats caught in glue traps at near contact distances. Seemed to work fine out of a beat up Rossi revolver.

Not easily I would think but with enough time and effort anything is possible. The 22 birdshot does have uses though. I have killed a good many carpenter bees, plus a few grasshoppers. There is a difference in the performance of the different brands of shells, Winchester did better out of rifles for me. I think the Remington was also good. I would get a 10" or so pattern out to 10 or 12 feet if I remember correctly. CCI's pattern opened up too much from a rifle and Federal was bad about sticking spent casings in the chamber. The 22 shot shells will not hurt your firearm. The worst possible out come would be leading the barrel but I never had problem.

Try to find a pump action rifle for those quick follow up shots.
One of the old Rossi 62a carbines/rifles, the later Taurus versions, for newer guns maybe one of the Remington 572 Fieldmasters or a Henry pump.

I think this is actually the first time I've heard it called birdshot. I've always heard and referred to it as snake shot. I doubt I would want to use it on anything but a snake that's getting too close to my personal space. Just my 2¢

As for cycling, I just don't think these have enough pressure to give the blowback bolt a good push.

I've always heard the .22 referred to as "birdshot", and other calibers as "snakeshot".

The pellet size in .22/22 mag is 12, or also called "dust".
In other calibers it's size 9. That's what I use loading in .38 specials. I used the .22 one time on a snake of decent size. It laughed at me!

I use the .22 against barn mice, one shot usually does it. But the rats are a different story. They'll take a hit and keep going. Gotta pop'em a couple times if over 15' away.

Since the shotshells are all I can find, I have built up several thousand rounds- perhaps upwards of 120,000 shotshell rounds, mostly CCI.

It's what I plink with now and they are, generally, worthless.

Excellent!!! Since the CCI shot shells are going for $.40 to $.50 per round now days you have about $50k worth of 22 shotshells, more or less, depending on brand. Nice investment.

Uhh, typo?

If not, why?

First of all, because ammo fort.

Additionally, I expect it to be worth three or four times as much in the future, resulting in paid off house, gloating privileges, photo opportunities and rock star status.

I shoot carpenter bees with .22lr birdshot

Very effective, and a shitload of fun.  Quiet too.

But it won't cycle semi auto.  Wouldn't bother reinventing the wheel to try to make it work either.  The shells are a different size than normal

I just use a bolt action .22. (My wife's CZ-452 ZKM in this case)  My advice is to pick up a cheap single shot old rifle for this purpose

Whatever you do, make sure you have eye pro on. Those little things are so wimpy they even ricochet off of drywall.

Very challenging shooting carpenter/bore bees with 22 bird shot.  I usually use my marlin garden gun (smoothbore) with them - it was cheap.  The CCI solid brass shells tend to stick in the chamber and you need to help them out with a knife or small screwdriver.
