Changed stocks on my 10/22 that I built maybe 13 years ago.  At one point in my life I knew quite a bit about them...clearly not anymore.

Not sure what happened, but something is wrong with the safety.  With the rifle fully assembled, I noticed the safety wouldn't "pop" back and forth (yes, hammer was back).  Rather, it would just kind of sloppily slide back and forth.  Safety wouldn't fully engage (yes, hammer was back) and when moving the safety to fire, the safety would slide way too far out.

Next, I took apart the trigger group.  The safety continues to do this with nothing else in the lower.  Shouldn't the safety pop back and forth with an empty receiver?  I know there is some sort of spring/detent in there that I'm not going to screw with.  Also, I started to reassemble the trigger group but the hammer won't drop to let me re-install the hammer spring (I believe this is due to the safety).

That make any sense whatsoever?

Can post pics, but not till tonight.

Thanks in advance.

The spring and detent are the key, even though the button is round, it has a specific orientation to the rest of the mechanism and has to be reassembled in a certain order.

I think you can find pictures and maybe a video on rimfire central.

I did this a while back when I got my 10/22 and got it right after a few tries. It just takes some patience.

I recently replaced my safety for an xtended safety.  Sounds like the safety may have rotated.  I had the same issue when I tightened the button heads.  It rotated the safety.  There are 2 flat sides.  The complete flat side should orientate up.  Other side has a v projection which should face down.  You can either twist it until it feels right or take apart the triger gorup and check that the flat side is facing up.  Just take out every thing except the safety.  Its a bi*** to get that spring and detent back in.  I lost the detent and spring twice.

Figured it out...and in the process figured out how the safety actualy works.

Just inserted a small flat head screwdriver underneath the safety from the rear and depressed the plunger...then rotated the safety back into the correct orientation.

Thanks guys!
