All of a sudden I've got two females and one pre-teen who want to "learn to shoot". I've got a 10/22 (doesn't everyone?) but would really like to start everyone out on a single shot, bolt.

I don't want super cheap, but not a fortune either. Something midrange. And suggestions on sights. I'm assuming iron sights, since that is the way I learned some 50 years ago, but again, suggestions wanted.

Any help greatly appreciated.

My vote is for a Savage Mk II. Excellent rifles and very accurate.

If you really want a single shot, the Mk I is also very nice.

The CZ 452 Scout rifle is a compact Rimfire rifle intended for young shooters. Due to its shortened dimensions, reduced weight and single round loading device it is a perfect first rifle for any boy or girl. The single round loading device helps teach ammo conservation and marksmanship. 5 and 10 round magazines are available for the Scout rifle.

I would go for the CZ I quoted above,Warning YOU will love it and buy more CZ rifles.

This, or a Marlin XT22, either the box mag or tube feed, both shoot very well.

By two females and a pre-teen I am assuming 2 of the 3 would do better with an adult proportioned rifle?

If so consider a CZ 452 American if you can still find one, a CZ 455 if you can't (it's basically a CZ 452 with an interchangeable barrel), and a CZ 453 if you don't mind paying a bit more for a CZ452 with a single set trigger.

They are not cheap but would qualify as upper mid range.  They all have great styling, are well made, very accurate and are not rifles that will end up being outgrown or obsolete.  They use a box magazine, but you can get a single shot adapter if you prefer a single shot.

Like everyone else here, get a Marlin or savage for under $200.00 or a CZ for around $300.00 (for the scout). You wont be disappointed in any of them and they will all be shooting great when you son gives it to his son.

I picked up a Stevens(Savage) model 73 single shot for $40, in great shape. It is the youth model and I can easily hold it one handed straight out, and I'm not a big person. As long as the crown is good and rifling looks good most people say they're tack drivers. You can easily find them under $100 alll day.

Since you want to teach new shooters, I think they will not discriminate. I sponsored my youngest son when he bought his first rimfire rifle and he got a Marlin 925 and was happy with it - now he is ready to move on and I offered him some of my fine German Walther KKJ and Anschütz 54 sporters to choose from.

Agree.

Another + here.

Later on when they get bigger you can replace the stock with a regular size stock and they can use the rifle basically forever.  Nicest quality in a .22 rifle I've seen in several years.
