I recently built my first AR but want to do a .22lr option.
My currenlt set up is 14.5 with permanat fixed end with a 1/7 twist. I'm not sure how how .22lr would work out of a 1/7 twist? I see Stag, CMMG have 22lr conversion kits where you replace the bolt and magazines for approx $180 or so. OR Dedicated upper, not sure what is economical or good/bad. any advice would be appreciated. |

The rimfire forum is there...
But to answer your question, let me ask you a question: What is your definition of precision? If you are expect nothing less than sub-MOA 10 shot groups @ 100 yards with your 22lr then a conversion kit is not for you. Get a dedicated upper for that. But if you can deal with a 2 inch group at 25 yards and all you really want is some economical time behind the trigger, while maintaining similar ergonomics with the AR15 then a conversion can work for you (I'm biased and would recommend the 22lr Evolution Conversion from CMMG [Comes with a plenty of options that mimic the same manual of arms for an AR-15]). |

The twist rate of a .22LR barrel is either 1:12 or 1:16 due to much slower speed, lighter bullet, and powder is all burned off by 16" of barrel.
Also remember if you do the BCG conversion route to put the regular AR BCG in and fire off 5 or so rounds of 5.56 every 4-500 of .22LR to blow out your gas system and barrel of lead. Your gas port will get clogged and barrel will get super gunked up otherwise. |

What are some cost effective dedicated uppers? I am quite happy with my Spikes ST-22 upper. They have great customer service, and after a little "tweaking/tuning" it runs like a raped ape. CMMG has a upper that has a functioning bolt hold open but the downside is that your mags need to be downloaded to less that 20 rounds for longevity with the hold open feature(unless they have improved upon that). Not so with Spikes and Tac Sol, or Nordic Components. Go over to the AT15 section and look at the rimfire section for some more advice on dedicated builds. |

For the small difference in price I would go with the dedicated upper. No concerns about plugging the gas tube in your .223. Better accuracy, especially considering you have a 1-7 barrel. The price difference between a conversion and a complete upper is not so much now that CMMG has one for $350. Personally I went with the CMMG as they have pulled ahead of "Brand S" with many updates to their bolts and accessories. They also are far ahead in price compared to "Brand S" and "Brand TS". The three big names in dedicated .22 uppers all sell a good product but its hard to get around what CMMG offers. They seem to be the ones who have really put the time, effort, and money into developing the best option. Their volume seems to help keep the price down.
Your nickel, spend it as you like. |

I would get a dedicated upper if it were me. With that twist rate (1/7) the best luck would not be with 38-40 grain grabbox bulkpack 22's but rather with this: http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=135961 |
