I havent been following along with the .22lr conversions for a regular AR.  My 30th is coming up soon and the fiancee needs some ideas on what I would like as a gift.  I told her a .22 conversion for range plinking would be a good idea.  I would like to know who has the most reliable conversion kit for a standard AR upper.  I'm not looking (yet) at a dedicated upper, but rather a bolt conversion kit.  I know of a couple manufacturers that offer the conversions, but I would like to know what is considered the "best".

If there is a section of the forum where this information is discussed, as I'm sure there is, and I have missed it; please refer me to that section.

poke around in the rimfire and pistol caliber section. some good info there. i have the ceiner (think thats how you spell it) version and like it alot. the kit comes with one stamped metal magazine. throw it as far as you can! do not get a .22 conversion kit without black dog magazines, period! they function 100%.the unit itself requires a little more cleaning than your normal ar bolt and carrier due to rimfire being a bit dirtier but not a big deal. have over 1000 rounds through mine with no issues. i keep it lubed and shoot mostly rounded tip cci ammo through it. the kit recommends round tip bullets but i did try hollow points and they worked ok too.it's a ton of fun, cheap to shoot and accuracy is almost as good as a dedicated unit. 1 in 9 barrel twist seems to work fine with .22 long. can keep all 10 shots in a 3 in. circle at 25 yards and keep about a 6 in. pattern at 50 yards. thats with irons from a bench.get it, you'll like it!

You can get a conversion for about $200.
A dedicated is only $350, from CMMC.

Well, you can get a conversion for a bit less than that. I think about $169 is the bottom. As for which one, people will give you their favorite. But if you step back and look at what company has made the most, which brand has the fewest issues, and which company really works hard at making their product top of the heap you have to go with a CMMG, period.

Some like their Spikes, others have had some issue with them. I think its more an issue with certain model hammers in the rifles and such. There are a couple of other lesser known brands out there but go over to the AR-15 Rimfire forum and you will see that CMMG is the conversion of choice.

You will also see that most will just tell you to get the dedicated upper for $150 more. I can not argue with that. I have shot them both ways and the dedicated upper does shoot better.
