So I'm building a suppressor host. I figure if I'm going to be sending a 40gr .22 bullet downrange @ 1050fps or less then why not step up to the 60gr SSS. 50% more lead in the air cant be a bad thing.
I've been digging around and have found that SSS isn't the most accurate stuff out there and requires a 1:9 twist to stabilize. Fast twist tubes aren't that hard to find for 10/22's but there doesn't seem to be much info on how they shoot. So I'm trying to decide on a factory contour barrel from tactical innovation or a .920 barrel from Hi Desert Dog. Anybody have experience with either one? then there's the bolt gun. the fast twist works out well enough for me on a semi then I'd like to do the same with my MKII, but I haven't found anybody that rebarrels them. So what's the story SSS? is it worth putting a rifle together for? Seems like it work rather well on critters out to about 50yds. thanks, LM |

I found that my 10/22 didn't shoot the SSS very well. I know they make dedicated 1 in 9 barrels for the SSS but didn't want to limit myself to one brand/load of .22 bullet. I use CCI subsonics and have killed numerous skunks, raccoons, grouse and red foxes. They all die pretty easily so I don't know what more a 60 grain SSS would do for me. If you are planning on shooting a larger animal than that I suggest a larger caliber firearm.
My 10/22 has a Tac Sol barrel and a Outback 2 supressor. Even without the suppressor, the CCI subsonics are very noticeably quieter than high velocity 22 ammo. Alot of the noise you hear with a 10/22 comes from the action cycling. If I want to get Hollywood quiet I put the suppressor on my bolt action mossberg .22. My Tac Sol barrel seems to be plenty accurate as I can routinely hit a 1" spinner from 75 yards when rested. |

The biggest problem you are going to have shooting SSS out of a auto is the bolt will start to unlock prematurely releasing the pressure of firing. These extra gasses and the noise associated with it can be heard over the supressed round. I tried some without a suppressor and when I held the bolt closed it was 1/2 as loud as when I shot it normally. This tells me a lot of the noise is coming from the receiver which the suppressor can't help.
I would stick with shooting 40 grain subs, no need for anything special and they will be quieter than the SSS. Something else, I have heard of plenty of strikes when using the SSS and a suppressor, even with the correct twist barrel. Dolomite |

I hadn't heard of any baffle strikes with SSS using the proper twist barrel. I have noticed the ejection port noise with it. If I build a 10/22 up for it I had planned on a heavier recoil spring.
If I pick up a fast twist barrel and then decide I'm not happy with SSS how's it going to shoot regular ammo? |
