I know something of this sort is frequently posted, but I couldn't find quite the answer I was looking for.
My dad just bought a Marlin 60, he's not really a shooter but got the marlin after he enjoyed shooting with me a bit (it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy to have a new shooter!) His eyes are getting a little older and would really like a scope. The max budget is $75. I don't expect anything specacluar, just don't want to end up with a piece of junk. PS How is the simmons deerfield 3-9x32? |

PS How is the simmons deerfield 3-9x32? Good scope! Very clear. I have one on my 39A and my buddy has one on his Rem 597. Mine wanders a bit over time, but it is always just two clicks left and one click up to being dead center at 50 yards again. It is much clearer and brighter than my big 52mm objective BSA airgun scope. Granted we are comparing budget scopes here, but from the scopes I have used that are not Nikon or Leupold, it is about as good as you are gonna get. Nothing fancy, but it works VERY WELL, and I have no reason to upgrade. The only other thing i'd suggest for aging eyes is an illuminated reticle. But you pay for the good ones. Any illuminated scope in your price range is airsoft quality, and not worth the hassle. A 1X bushnell red dot might be a good idea in your range, but that has no illumination. Basically fancy iron sights, but I would believe that the problem is an inability to focus on the front sights rather than the target. Might want to look into that. They are not bad for the price. |

simmons 8-point 3x9-40 is 34 bucks at SWFA. I picked up a Simmons 8-Point 3x9-50. It simply sucks. I would never buy one again. I replaced it with a Nikon and never looked back. The Simmons wouldn't even make a good tomato stake! For a rimfire rifle, you should get a rimfire scope that has the objective set for 50 yards or a scope with an adj. objective. Most rifle scopes are factory set at 100 yards and don't really work well at closer ranges when mounted on a rimfire. The Simmons is one of the preset ones for 100 yrds. This and the crappy quality in general dictate a need for a better scope. IMO of course... |

I like my Tasco 3-9x40mm and the BSA I had on my 10/22 (sold it to my dad when I upgraded to the Tasco). Both are very clear and hold zero quite well on a .22. With ether of those scopes and some rings from Wal-Mart (I got the $20 all steel rings - The others I had problems with not getting them tight enough) you will be good to go.
Be sure to blue lock tight all of the screws on the rings |
