I had an extra factory stock and I wanted to make a Custom Sporterized stock from it. I took my Tapco apart and will start over when I buy my next 10/22 when I can afford it. The barrel and receiver is from the Tapco, I put back the weaver rail and attached a Busnell Trophy Red Dot.
What I did to the factory stock -cut the barrel band, factory grip, and carved a slot for the grip. did alot of sanding -I filed and smoothed out everthing I could. I had to cut more of the factory grip then I thought because when you first put the grip on the webbing b/n your them and pointer finger is tight so I filed that part of the grip. -the grip is a Stag grip from an AR15 LPK -I filed and sanded the inside of the grip so I could slide the back of the trigger guard into the grip. -drilled a new hole in the grip and make sure its at a right angle to the stock. Then I drilled a new hole into the stock. Got a wood screw and washer from the hardware store and tested it out. when you test it out you'll see how much more of the factory grip will need to be filed and sanded. -Taped up the stock and beging sanding down the original finish. Then painted Black with Rust-Oleum Multi Colored Texture Spray paint. 1-light coating, 1-heavier coating since it stick better, and then 1-touch up coating. This way sanding inperfections are hidden. let it dry for 5 days (can says 24 hrs but let it cure) -took the tape off, put the barrel/receiver in and then put the grip. It works well but there but only drawback is the grip will go foward towards the trigger but its pretty tough. BTW, I painted the clear Butler Creek mag flat black too. LMK what you think???

It appears that clearance is tight at the rear of the pistol grip. Can you get your hand up high enough ? is there room to make a bigger clearance cut in the stock? YES.....since your customizing it to your hand, you can file down the stock grip high enough for you. Someone with larger hand than me might have a little trouble with my grip. what I did was put the grip on and used a Sharpie to figure out how much to file down. Keep filing until its comfortable and then sand it down. |

I made sure it dried 5 days before I did any more work it it. The spray can says 24 hrs to dry but I really wanted to give it a week. After inspection last night I knew I could finish it today. |
