Just got a 597 with the heavy barrel, laminate stock, rail and no irons.  Loving it just holding it in my hands.

But the barrel's not FF.

Should I sand the barrel channel to float the tube?  Any 597 owners do this and experience positive results?  Or does it shoot fine as-is?

Thanks.

ETA the scope rail isn't all that high and the barrel sure is thick... Any idea what height rings to use for a scope with a 40mm objective?  I dug out an old pair from a shoebox and the scope sits 1/2" too high, I think they're mediums so I'll probably try low rings.  Comments?

If it's a wood stock, sanding the barrel channel is a piece of cake and certainly won't hurt.

I bought one with the plastic stock and had to open the channel to stop the stock from pressing hard on the side.  Filled the voids with epoxy while I was there and now have a very accurate rifle with a stiff forend.  Couldn't be happier.

Take your time doing the sanding.  Start out with 80 grit paper and work your way down to 120 grit.  Apply a bit of polyurethane finish when you're done.  Takes all of an hour and will only help you in the accuracy department.
