What's the effective range of a Ruger 10/22?

75ish yds? No clue, prefer .45 acp or 5.56.

Not really a round you would wanna take out to 300

I think he means max effective range.  In the M16A2 the USAF list it at 550 meters for a point target.  This means that not only will the bullet reach the target with an acceptable success rate it will also with with enough force to cause the intended effect.  So bikerboy needs to define the target size, rate of success, and foot pounds of energy required at impact.  Once you know these things then you can go to a ballistics calc and find the answer to the impact energy.  Then you need to shoot it at that distance to see if you can hit the target.  To me that means 95% hits and the limiting factor for that will be the wind in the 22lr, not the rifle shooting it.  So to answer your question bikerboy, the box on most 22lr shells say 1.5 miles.

Mostly the .22 long rifle cartridge is a 50 - 75 yard rifle.  That being said, I've killed squirrels and feral cats out to a 100 yards with head shots using Remington Yellow Jackets which are Hyper Velocity rounds.  Similar to CCI Stingers.

Reference the Ruger 10/22: without some customization it's really only a 50 yard rifle.  If you put a bull barrel on it, and polish the action a little you can really make this rifle shine.

i can hold 30 rounds in a 2 inch circle at 100 yards with my pretty basic 10/22.  i know people that shoot clay targets at 150 yards.  i think much farther than that is really pushing it for the round.

I have shot mine out to 300 yards (at a sillouette gong), and it was about 50% hit (you could see the hits throuh the scope), and used a hell of a lot of elevation...

I regularly take ptarmigans out to 200 yrds and more with good results. Also in Montana same thing on gophers. Lots of one shot kills.

Thanks for the replies. I was wondering if squirrels could be taken at 75 yrds.
