I will just use this as a thread to post updates on my build.

I've got about $1100 into this rifle and it was worth every cent.

Parts list:

Green Mt. 10/22 18" Blued Fluted .920" - 22LR
Millett TRS-1 scope

Skeeter Helical Matte Black Handle.
Skeeter parkerized bolt
Skeeter V-Lock Barrel Stabilizer
WeaponKraft Bolt Buffer
Volquartsen bedding kit.
Tapped hole in rear of receiver for extra anchor point.

The trigger pull is a rough guess at 2.25 to 2.5 pounds.
Volquartsen Extended Magazine Release
Volquartsen Hammer
Volquartsen Hammer Strut Spring
Volquartsen Hammer Shims
Volquartsen Trigger Plunger Spring
Polished Hammer Strut
Volquartsen Automatic Bolt Stop/Release

Harris Bipod

---------------------------------------------

Here is what I started with.  My father bought this ruger 10/22 on an auction and as you can see it was not taken care of.  I bought it from him for what he paid for it and proceeded to plan my version of an ultimate.  Step one was to strip it down and clean the hell out of it.  A project that took me 2 hours to do because it was so grubby.

The barrel is so pock marked there was no hope for it and the stock was beat up and dinged pretty good.

So what the hell, its only money right! :bthumb:
I brought up shootersdiscount.com/ and started shopping.

I should have the following in a few days.

Rimfire Technologies Black Widow 10/22 Bolt Buffer

Power Custom 10/22 Weaver Style Receiver/Barrel Scope Base - Black

B&C Anschutz Thumbhole 10/22 Stock - OD Green/Black Web

Green Mt. 10/22 18" Blued Fluted .920" - 22LR

I also picked up a Skeeter Helical Matte Black Handle.

B&C Mag Release

In the mean time I decided to strip and repaint the trigger housing and receiver.

A shot of the new Skeeter handle on the stripped receiver.

All i had access to was some emery cloth and 600grit sandpaper.

And here is as far as I've gotten right now.

And for those that are curious, here is the primer and paint I am using.

I will post updates as I go.

I saw this on RFC, but since I dont post there I will let you know it should be a lot of fun and I look forward to your progress...

I'm a little disappointed in the Ultra Flat Black paint.
Its so flat it looks like a shade of grey!  Its more then likely from the flash but i can still see greyish tint in the light.

Hopefully that changes when i get it into a better light and it has had time to dry.

[#3]
i would have taped up the inner receiver area. you may end up with lots of paint gumming up the action.
other than that nice job.
fwiw
i picked up an ultrasonic from HF for $120ish with their 15% off coupon. it takes all that crap off in about 20 min using 50/50 simple green and hot H2O

I was wondering about painting the inside.  It was pretty worn out in there so I figured I might as well touch it up while i'm at it.

So your saying bare metal would have been better?

when I painted an old bolt action, I taped off all of the insides so I didn't have to worry about paint.
first what I would do is get some q-tips and paint stripper (fingernail polish remover would probably work too)  and get the paint off of any contact surfaces.  if there isn't anything touching the metal when everything is put together, it shouldn't hurt it to have a little paint.

This morning I put the receiver together and worked the action to see where it was going to bind up on me.  I knew it was going to i just didn't think i was going to have to remove as much as I did.

After racking the bolt 50 times this is what I saw.

This is what had to be done in order to get it to cycle smoothly.

I really didn't like the dark grey it ended up being.  So I sanded them a bit with 600 grit and then taped off a few areas, now they are ready for round 2.

It now has a blend of these 3.  The Rustoleum was used because thats what I had on hand.

Baked in the oven at 200 degrees for an hour to help cure the paint.

And this is what I ended up with.  They look a lot better then what that picture shows.
Had a hard time taking pictures of it because it just wants to absorb all the light.

MUCH BETTER.

First time refinishing a receiver.  I'm definitely learning as I go and having fun doing it.

The fun parts should be here tomorrow!

Project Empty Wallet

Love the title!

And knew right away you were rebuilding a 10/22.

Looks good so far, can't wait to see the finished project.

WOW! That looks nice.  I might get brave enough to paint an AR lower to match my Colt A1 upper.  What if I don't like the color and want the original black back.  How do you strip the paint off without damaging the anodized finish?
12/3/2007 11:19:49 AM EDT
[#10]
Paint it knowing that if you don't like it you will redo it all, or don't paint it at all.

Part came today!

I assembled the receiver and then put the trigger together.  Still have the stock trigger and will upgrade that when I get some more $$.

I had to trim up the front of the receiver area and the back side of the trigger housing area on the stock so that it would fit into place.

Once I put it all together I immediately noticed how far away the trigger was from the palm swell.
But it worked out good because its the proper distance for me to just engage the trigger with the correct portion of my finger.

Shooters Discount sent me the wrong scope base.  I ordered part no PC-ASM-BLK and ended up with the PC-SM-BLK.
The difference is that the one I ordered extends over the barrel and gives me greater range for mounting optics.

Email has been sent to them and hopefully I get a response tomorrow and get it corrected.
I'm not to worried about it since they seem to be a pretty good shop.

So in the mean time here is my mock up of what it should look like when I'm done.

I have to go get different scope rings for it.  This scope came off my AR which is going to end up with Bushnell MP trophy 1x 32mm.

Anyway here are the pictures.

And my version of scope snobbery.  Its a Leupold Mark 4 4.5-14x40mm LR/T.  Its worth about 2x as much as the gun.

Slight overkill... definitely.  But cool none the less.

Brought it outside to made sure it cycled and it did.  I'm not going to add any lube to it until this weekend so I'm sure the paint has had enough time to cure.

I HOPE to be able to shoot it this weekend at a family event but its not looking to promising right now since I'm lacking the proper mount.

I will post the final pics and targets when I get that far.

Edit -  My wife just weighted the gun and it comes in at 6.5lbs.
12/3/2007 5:35:11 PM EDT
[#12]
nice rifle

i'm not nit picking but could you have mounted that scope any higher
12/3/2007 5:36:49 PM EDT
[#13]
Or you could read the post again and see where I say that I need to get different rings, or the fact that it is just placed on there without a rail.

Well then it's the perfect scope for the rifle!

I've got a hundred dollar scope on my $75 dollar 10/22. But then those are 1979 and 1978 prices, respectively.

Great looking rifle! I'll bet that suckers' gonna be a heck of a shooter.

Well so far I have broke 2 of my star bit tools trying to get the screws off the scope rings.

The little SOB's just don't want to move.

[#16]
How come you didn't get some higher rings for your scope?

J/K.  Looks great!

Hope my dad likes his Christmas gift.
He has wanted a left hand thumbhole stock for a little while now.
I asked him if we was going to get one now that I am setting up mine 10/22.
He said he gave up on it since the medical bills are stacking up from his heart issues.  (Atrial fibrillation)

So hopefully he enjoys his gift and it takes away the stresses of life a little bit.

Revival Industries Tundra Left Hand stock, B&C Mag Release, hex bolt and a black VQ auto bolt release.
O' and since his stock profile barrel would look out of place I picked up a Green Mt. 10/22 18" Blued Fluted .920" for it also.

It will give him a great reason to go shooting with me when I come home for Christmas.

The bad part... I want to ditch my Bell and Carlson stock for a nice wood one now.  I've got stock envy now.
12/6/2007 5:06:41 PM EDT
[#18]
That is one nice piece of wood!!!

I got some scope rings and shooters discount got me the correct base.  Was out and ran through 50 rounds and I had a grin from ear to ear.  I will post pics of the final build when I get some.

Its a hell of a shooter.
12/7/2007 9:14:08 PM EDT
[#20]
Its fully functional now.  I took it out and shot a box of CCI Blazers through it.
It cycled great and didn't have any issues at all.  Accuracy was excellent and the feel of the gun is amazing.
This is now tied with my Buck Mark rifle as my favorite gun.  I think once I get a new trigger grouping put in, the Buck Mark will loose the race by a hair.

I will post targets hopefully this weekend.

[#21]
Here is what I managed to do from todays short outing.

I thought I could get buy with not having to use blue loctite but I was wrong.  The base loosened up on me at the end.
Also figured out that I need to replace the extractor because it wouldn't pull duds or jams out very well.
I'm thinking about chamfering the bolt also because I had a few that failed to feed.  I will first put the stock spring back on the guide bolt and try that.
I don't think its the mag because its a new factory.

Thanks OdT off of rimfirecentral.com for the idea.

I did this to rectify the sticky mag issue i was having.  I also like the control of being able to pull the mag out instead of hoping it drops out.

I went to Menards this morning after church and tried to find something that would work similar.  Here is what I cam up with.

The acrylic is some hard stuff.  I couldn't shave it with a knife and had to get some side cutters to trim the edges.
I peeled the sticky backing off pressed it in and used Loctite super glue around the edges.

I tested it to make sure that myself and others wouldn't be stuck with a snapped off stub if the acrylic was susceptible to different loads.

Here is my testing:
1. I pulled with all my might and couldn't get it to budge.
2. I also tried side force to see if it would break, it didn't even notice.

I even did drop tests to see what it would do...
First drop was from 2 feet.  Nothing happened, no cracks or anything.  I repeated the above two tests with same results.
I then dropped it from about 4 feet to simulate it being dropped out of a gun.  All I got was the smack of plastic on concrete.  I thought for sure something broke.
Picked it up and repeated the pull test and side load and it didn't budge.

There are no cracks or even ding marks from the drops.  I'm giving it my thumbs up for use.  :bthumb:

Those are just bubbles in the acrylic.

I'm trying to figure out the best way to put some rings into the acrylic so there is more of a positive grip feel when you grab it.

I have to give credit where credit is due.  Didn't want anyone thinking it was some bright idea I had.

Thanks guys!  Its been my obsession lately and its always good to hear the positive comments.

I've got a ways to go on it yet before I'm done, or think I'm done anyway.

I need new trigger internals, or polish up the stock ones because its to rough and heavy of a trigger pull.

I plan on bedding the receiver/barrel to get rid of any pivoting and movement there is.

And I'm looking at Lauer Custrom weaponry in Wisconsin to do the duracoat on it since my attempt at refinishing is slowly failing horribly.
Which doesn't surprise me, after all i did use regular spray paints.

The Barrel and receiver went into the gunsmith today to get Dura coated matt black. Should get it back the first week of January.
Since my initial paint job failed I decided to just have a qualified pro take care of it.

Glad I purchased a new trigger assembly.  I now have a good lower trigger housing with tight pins and a trigger pull thats a fraction of what stock is.

I polished up the hammer, disconnect and sear.

Got the barrel and receiver back from the gun smith.  I'm not to happy with the paint job he did but I wet sanded and fixed it as best I could.  Next time I will be doing the painting myself.  That way i can only blame myself for screwing it up.

Anyway onto the next step in the process.  I had the smith put a clean out hole in the receiver so I could install a rear hold down.

I placed the receiver into the stock and marked the stock.  To make sure I did it right the first time.  I maked the stock through the hole then i measured were the center of the hole should be.

drilled a hole out that was slightly smaller then the screw and then threaded it into the receiver.

Once the screw was installed I set the receiver into place.
this shows how much room I have to move around.

Here is when its fully seated and the the front pillar screw is in.

How long does it take for Duracoat to setup so that it won't scratch?
It was painted on Christmas and its still soft enough to scratch with my finger nail.

Lauer/Duracoat offered to fix my finish for me, for little to nothing!

Talk about standing behind your product and quite the show of character.

Tell me about it.  They stepped up and did something they didn't have to do because it wasn't their issue in the first place.
I will be buying duracoat from them just because they went out of their way to help me.
I'm a firm believer in customer loyalty and loyalty in general and they sure made an impression on me.

I will post finished pics once I get the parts back.

I picked up a Skeeter manganese parkerized bolt for it also.
So now the ONLY thing left of the original 1976 carcase is the receiver.

At this point i just want to get out and shoot the damn thing but thats not going to happen for a while.

Finish was fixed by LCW and it looks brand new.  They did an excellent job fixing the F'd up mess that it was!

I did however pick up and install a Skeeter parkerized bolt and the volquartsen bedding kit.

I haven't shot it since I got it back from LCW 5 weeks ago.

Target from today.
50yds.  30 degrees F with a left to right 8mph wind.

My main goal was to see if it would consistently group.  And that It did.
Next time out I should have some good target ammo with to see what it will really do at 50yds.

Shots were taken while siting on one straw bale and the gun is resting on top of 2 straw bales that are stacked on top of each other.

The gun does not like the Winchester Xpert hollow points.  I couldn't get it to pattern at all with them.  Plus they would Jam in the chamber.
The CCI Blazers ran great.
The clusters on this target are the blazers.  The row across the top were shot with the Winchesters Xperts.
The rest of the flyer's are from me not taking the target down before letting a friend do rapid fires on the one right next to it. :D

I really need to put this scope on something more worthy and get a nice illuminated reticle scope for this.

I've decided to move the Leupold back to my AR and get it setup for hunting this year.

Within the next couple weeks I'll be purchasing a Konus M30 6.5x25x44 to put on this rifle.
I'm tempted to get the 8.5x32x52 for 30 bucks more but i'm thinking its to much of a scope for the paper punching and random hunting i would do with this rifle.

DID you get your stock with a Bipod swivel or did you make your own. I got the same stock and no swivel to put a harrids bipod. HELPPPPPPPPP. What do I use to convert mine to a bipod. I have asked 10 people and not one can give me a straight FU****in awnser. So annoying....I know I need to drill what parts do I need to Mount a bipod.
3/29/2008 5:10:39 PM EDT
[#46]
Very simple and super easy to do.

Get an Uncle Mikes stud swivel kit.  I bought mine from Walmart.
Find a drill bit thats just a little smaller then the stud.
Measure and mark the spot were you want it on your stock.
Drill the whole about as deep as the stud is long.
Then just screw in the stud and attached your bipod.
3/29/2008 6:19:00 PM EDT
[#47]
ok Is that what you did to yours? So the stock is solid enough to drill into? I'm scared the material willnot be beefy enough. Did you epoxy it in? Maybe I will do that. Thank you. Anymore info on that would be appreciated. So did you buy your stock without the stud???
3/29/2008 6:35:28 PM EDT

Ok my only question to you know is what size did you go 1/2  5/8 3/4 there are many sizes. I want it to be strong..
3/30/2008 4:29:57 AM EDT
[#49]
Thats what I did to my stock.  As far as I know you can't buy them with the stud in them.
I don't remember the size bit I used.

If you have any more questions on the install you should probably take it to a smith and have them do it.  It really is as simple as I have stated.
