What do you guys know about the .17 HMR? I havn't heard much about it since it first came out. I am trying to decide between a .22 mag or the .17 for shooting critters around the house and farm. I have pretty much decided that whatever one I get it will be a marlin bolt action. Any suggestions would be apreciated. thanks, jjrobo |

It depends on your intended critters. Personally any way you slice it I think the 17 hmr blows the 22 mag away. I have never had an accurate 22 mag, owned and messed with four different ones and no luck, never better than 2" groups, which isn't enough for me off a bench. I just don't like the 22 mag at all, so I am kind of biased. I have shot about a dozen large Alaska fox with mine inside 100yds and it dropped them in thier tracks with no pelt damage. I wouldn't try it on a coyote though.Small critters will be torn up by the little 17 g vmax, and birds will be a mess. If you have ground squirrels and pigeons to take care of the 17 will be great. and its a tack driver. I have the marlin 17V. I swapped out the stock for a gray laminet from marlin, floated the barrel, glass bedded the action and tuned the trigger, then topped it with a burris ffII 4.5x14 . The groups below were shot at 100yds ,no wind and I adjusted the scope during the shooting, shot clockwise . http://images1.fotki.com/v3/photos/3/35951/69518/Image002-4-vi.jpg?1021854188 I love the caliber, real accurate for a rimfire and now there are a couple new bullets being loaded by a couple different manufacturers. Its always nice to have variety. Mine does great with the hornady/vmax offering. see ya |
+1 for the rig and the load. No/light wind critical, but inexpensive performance past 100yds. |
