I dug this out of storage this week and got it cleaned up.  I was wondering, was the buttpack ever attached to the medium Alice pack or frame?  I know with Alice stuff you can rig up most any kind of way, but was there a proper attachment?  I do have the metal clips, but the webbing in the Alice and the webbing in the buttpack don't match up.

Never saw one attached to an ALICE.

Always a just part of harness/web gear.

The boonie pack was designed to be on the LBE belt.  The original models were made of a thick duck cotton that made a great patrol base pillow.

If you need more capacity, attach the MOLLE I Sleeping Bag Carrier to the bottom of your Medium/Large Ruck and the slots in the frame.

Or have a MOLLE Sustainment Pouch sewn to the sides or have some PALS loopage added to the Alice ruck sides for attaching Tac Tailor Large Utility Pouches, etc to the sides.  http://www.tacticaltailor.com/largeutilitypouch.aspx

I don't even think the 2.25" nylon webbing loops on the sides are wide enough to hang a buttpack on each side for increased capacity.

Dunno, depends on what it is you are trying to accomplish.      We just wore the buttpacks on our equipment belts then either adjusted the H or Y Harness long enough for the buttpack to ride below the ruck frame lumbar pad or just left the equipment belt unhooked on front so the harness would allow the buttpack to sag below the lumbar pad.  Then you just hiked up the LBE and fastened the belt after you dumped your ruck at the AA or Patrol Base to go out to cause mischief.

Nope.
If you were wearing a buttpack it hung under the ruck off your LBE as others have stated.
If you needed more storage on your ruck you were probably packing something wrong..
