I've got a set of HIGHCOM SAPI cut 4SAS7 plates. They are stand alone level IV and marked as such. I have high confidence in them but they weigh 10lbs each.
I also happen to have some gov pattern SAPI plates rated for 7.62. These are roughly 5lbs each. I'd like to use them as stand alone, but there is conflicting info on how they are rated. Anyone know if the gov pattern plates are IIIA or IV? Would or should I need to add a SAPI cut IIIA soft armor backer? |

are they black or green? the black ones are the equivalent of Level III in-conjunction w/soft armor the greens ones are the equivalent of Level III w/o soft armor and Level IV with soft armor (for purely back-face deformation reasons) imo, the older original black SAPIs are the best combination of weight and protection for what most people in the US will use them for. a medium only weighs 4lbs and will stop M80, M193 and M855 |

Looks like I can get soft armor backers for about $100 ea. |
