Looking for a cheap plate carrier I can put a couple mag pouches on and leave it next time my bump in the night gun or for training classes it won't see any high use just really a just to have just in case kinda deal. I hate to say it but I'm looking at the condor stuff on Amazon which seems like my best option for cheap.
I had a eagle universal chest rig sure I could carry 300 rounds but I'd rather have body armor and a few mags for what I'd expect to use it for. Any suggestions other than condor? I'd love to spend big bucks and get something really nice but it will just sit in the closest 99% of the time |

I was in the same boat as you. I bought AR500 plates/condor carrier for about $300 and then some different pouches from LAPolice gear.
I then assembled a battle belt and actually use it. When it wears out I'll upgrade to a reputable brand but for the plates/carrier that just sit next to the safe for a "jic" moment, condor/ar500 will work for me. |

I'd avoid the Condor MOPC. Tried it, didn't hold the plates securely, and the shoulder buckles squeaked.
I picked up a Gray Ghost Minimalist for a "bump in the night" rig. $117 so it's a little more than Condor, but seems to work so far. Still haven't had a good chance to really beat the shit out of it though. |

Wont be able to buy anything right away doing my research now then I have to convince the wife to let me buy body armor apparently eating and paying the mortgage is more important |

It's a newer design, and may work well; I just haven't had a chance to see one in person. I'd be a little worried about the plates swimming (Sentry can supposedly hold a 11x13 I think), but it might work. $45 last I looked. If you go with thin (steel) plates, go to your local walmart and buy a foam camping mat; something like $7, and make padding. I've got one pad behind my front (buildup) late and two layers of padding behind my rear (non-buildup) plate and it does wonders for making the plates fit better in the carrier and improving overall comfort. Walmart also carries matte "OD Green" duct tape (the camo tapes are shiney) that I used to cover the corners since they show with the Gray Ghost carrier. ETA: If you main concern is just pistol rounds, take a look on ebay. You can probably pick up a Spartan setup (not brand-x chinese plates) for under $300, and a CATI setup for under $200. I wouldn't trust it for stopping the new M855A1 stuff, but the last "bump in the night" I dealt with was just a guy with a baseball bat at the "undocumented immigrant" a houses two down from me. ETA2: Lots of pics on the GGG at http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_6_10/462221_GGG_Minimalist_PC_and_Shellback_Patriot_PC.html&page=2 |

It's worth checking out. I got a coyote minimalist pc on sale for 35% off the first time I tried to get a Kryptek Highlander pc and they were out of stock. Then a month or so ago I was ordering some stuff and I threw a Kryptek Highlander minimalist pc in my cart and it was just under $60. It's much easier to rationalize $60 with my wife, than $200 or more. So I have to order plates separately anyway. |

Probably gonna go with the condor sentry. Since I won't serving any high risk warrants and kicking down doors and it's going to be bump in the night grab the gun go check the noise kinda use should I get front and rear plates off the bat or just go with a front plate for now?
For my intended use are hard plates even worth it should I go with soft armor instead? I know the condor brand seems to gravitate to the airsoft people but having played airsoft before getting into real Guns them people are hard on gear (they are all teir 1 operators Ya know) reviews seem positive on the sentry. |

You'll get made fun of for spending more than $20 on an optic, but if you even mention condor in a less-than-extremely-negative way you'll get your ass flamed of. All the airsoft stores/fields near me sell nothing but condor, so fuck 'em.</rant> Hard vs soft is up to your budget, expected threats, and need for concealability. Personally I went with III+ steel plates. The reason I did was: 1. Long shelf life. I couldn't find any ceramic, plastic, or aramid that claimed over 10 years shelf life (some steals claim 20), and I didn't want to deal with replacing the plates anytime soon. 2. Stab resistance. The only stab-rated soft armor I found was over $450, and I figure getting stabbed is about as big a threat as being shot. 3. Convenience. I could get hard plates in less than a week without having to mail out credentials. 4. Security. I was able to just go buy the hard plates bullshit-free. Most companies require you to send them some kind of ID, proof your a good boy, birth certificate, passport, etc, with your order, and I have yet to see one with a security practices that were even close to tolerable. Identity theft sucks. 5. Protection was "good enough". My main concerns were gangbanger weapons; pistols, shotguns, airguns, knives, baseball bats, etc.. YMMV though. Do your own research. You want both front and back. You'll find your carrier sags forward with just one plate, and gets even worse when you start adding pouches full of shit to the front. |

The reason I got out of airsoft most are so full of them selves. found a set of lvl3 plates one curved one flat with an anti spawl coating for $109. I know nothing about armor really just getting into it but if it saus NIJ certified should be gtg right? link to plates Im looking at |

I know nothing about armor really just getting into it but if it saus NIJ certified should be gtg right? link to plates Im looking at No. Avoid those (probably). I'll post more when I get to a real keyboard. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile ----------------------------------------------- ETA: The plate you linked isn't actually NIJ certified. There's a lot of companies that use the "NIJ III" term when they mean "this should stop the same rounds that an NIJ III certified plate would stop, even though this isn't actually certified with the National Institute of Justice". Looking at the test sheet from H.P. White Labs, those plates are probably capable of being certified if the manufacturer wanted to go through the process. If you're just concerned about stopping pistol rounds, the plates you linked are probably adequate (though excessively heavy), but you should do your own research before purchasing. If you're worried about stopping rifle rounds you might want to look elsewhere. Those plates don't have any mention of anti-fragmentation coatings. If you get shot with those, expect to get hit in the arms/legs/chin with bullet fragments. Keep in mind extremely high velocity rounds (notably M193 and M855A1) will typically punch through most steel armor, even though the plates will stop slower rounds like 308, 7.62x39, and M855. Some of the newer steels (AR500.com's "III+", Spartan's "Armaply", AmourWear's "AR680") do better against fast rounds. |
|
wow I was watching videos of the Ar500 plates stopping m855 never thought about them not stopping m193.
So looks like if I want to stop M193 Spartan or AR500 armor lvl III+ are the plates to get gots to save that bonus money then convince the wife i need this level of armor lol Thanks for all the info |
