I'm taking a carbine/pistol course late in the fall and I need a recommendation for a set of gloves. I need something that will keep the hands warm, thin enough to not interfere with operating my weapon(s) and must look somewhat tacti-cool to impress the chicks.

ETA: I need knee pads as well, please recommend a make/model.

TIA.

Usually the "cry once buy once" advice is sound. But I too like the Mechanix M-pact gloves.

Bought some fancier Oakleys, but they wore out just as fast. I use them for other things besides shooting, like lawn mowing, running power equipment etc.

So for me the Mechanix gloves seem to be the sweet spot for price vs. performance.

I can't speak highly enough of SKD's PIG gloves. As soon as they break in, it's like not wearing anything. I can write with them on, press buttons on GPS and radios, and generally do anything as if I wasn't wearing gloves at all. And for a couple bucks extra, you can get them with silver thread in the thumb and pointer finger for touch screen use.

Now the downside: they aren't flame retardant, if that matters to you. They also are not very durable, but in my (limited) experience, nothing with that kind of sensitivity is. My first pair held up to a couple weeks of wear on (Army) ranges,  6 months of occasional light law enforcement wear (keeping hands my hands warm and shit), and then 2 months of pretty heavy field wear before finally getting a hole in the finger tip. And that probably wouldn't have happened if I hadn't used them to move some c-wire.

Now, I was generally good about pulling on a set of leather work shells over the top of them almost anytime that I was messing with c-wire and switching them out with a pair of mechanix gloves whenever I was doing general work.

Overall, my favorite shooting gloves ever. I bought 3 more pair.

SKD Pig. All I use anymore. Everyone I work with who tries them, ends up buying a pair.

Pig is nice if you don't mind replacing them frequently.

I like Mechanix fastfit (they come in super tactical multicam or coyote). $10 on Amazon or $15 for coyote.

multicam

For knee pads, the only option is Crye G3 pants. With the built in pads.  Or looks at ArcTeryx knee caps.

+1 for ArcTeryx knee caps. Only external knee pads worth considering

Plain old Nomex flyers gloves are good too and inexpensive. I always just cuffed the extra wrist material over.

Hatch brand gloves always last a good while for me of pretty heavy use.

I was a long-time user of SKD's PIG gloves, but Mechanix's tactical gloves are my new favorite.

M-pact are nice but I stopped buying them because the Velcro closure sucks. Comes apart within minutes of putting the gloves on. Did they fix that yet?

If you have an O'Reilly's autoparts close, they have the Mechanix Wear Tactical MultiCam Original gloves for like $14.99.  This is a great price considering I spent like 10 dollars more online getting them, and then found out O'Reilly's had them a few days later for cheaper, ugh.

I have OR Ironsights. Dexterous, grippy, comfortable, and not too hot in the summer but keep some warmth in the cold. Plus they look cool. As for durability, I've been wearing the pair I currently have for the last 2.5 years. Nothing too strenuous, but they have seen lots of rangetime, force on force scenarios and 6 months in Kuwait/Iraq.

Amazon is having a smoking deal on their multicam mechanix tactical gloves. I bought a pair of Originals for myself, and some Fast Fits for the wife.

Fast Fits are the softest/thinnest of the line, and will not feel much like a glove. The Originals have some extra leather. I also have a pair of Impacts, but I don't like them as much as they have too much heavy material on the finger tips. Would be great if I really needed the protection, but I don't.

Mechanix Originals or Fast Fit.  I prefer fast fit myself. You can get them in all kinds of "Tacticool" colors.  My primary set right now is a set of Multicam fast fit but "on the bench" so to speak for when I wear those out are some Foliage Originals and a set of Wolf Grey Fast Fits.  That Wolf Grey color is starting to grow on me.

The gloves are cheap enough that I'll try both the SKD Pig gloves and the Mechanix. Based on looks alone, I prefer the SKD. I'll follow the advice given on the knee pads

I appreciate all the replies, thank you.

I like Flame Resistant gloves for weapons handling.  Keeps my fingers from getting burnt.

Sportsmansguide usually has few different types at any given time.  Hell of a lot cheaper than paying retail.

I've been using aviator gloves since the mid-90's and they are easily my favorite glove (unless they weather is super cold). A drawback to most aviator gloves is, if you have them fitted properly, you will blow out the stitching in the fingers in short order. I've been using a pair of the Magpul flight gloves since pre-SHOT and they are easily the best aviator glove I've used. No seam blow put, touch screen compatible, etc.  Mine have been through several warrant services, day to day police use, flame/heat resistant, and responding to an active shooter in an apartment complex.

Mechanics mpact for me too.

I used my alta flex kneepads this weekend and was pleased. No falling down or anything, forgot they were there

I don't care for the impacts because of the extra leather type material they use in the thumb and forefinger.  IMO the two most important fingers for being able to feel what you're doing and Mecanix added material there to decrease dexterity.

+1 ArcTeryx knee caps and +1 SKD Pig Alpha .  Both fit and feel very good!  I only buy the Pigs when on sale.  I also have a pair of Coyote Mechanix original which are nice as well.  The Pigs fit like they were specially made for my hand.  By the way, they also sell a Charlie model for women.  I bought my wife a pair and they fit like they were melted around her hand yet comfortable with full movement.  She loved them!

Plus one to both of those. Knee Caps are the way to go. Pants with knee pads in them such when you sleep in your gear. Awesome to hear this! If she has time we could really use some reviews on the FDT-Charlie model. I am not sure word has gotten out that we have them.

SOS.

This is the first I've heard of them. I'll let my wife know about them. Thanks!

Mechanix Fast Fits are the shit. I always have a pair with me on patrol. Throw a pair of nitrile gloves on under them when handling the nasty. They go through the wash without a problem and hold up well.
