Currently I'm using a $30 regular headset and looking to invest into a good one. Reading into I see that MSA Sordins Pro X, Peltors (I believe) are good choices, but I am inclined more towards the Sordins. Ive seen some Sordinds that come with a Boom Mic but I cannot seem to find them.
What's your recommendation.? |

There are a ton of threads on this. The reality is you are going to spend $400+ for the headset and PTT that works with your $30 radio.
If you went with Howard leights and a speaker Mic, you could run a 3.5mm male/male cord from your ears to the Mic, use the Mic like a PTT and speak into it, and for under $75 you have a solution. TCI will make a PTT that will work with just about any radio and commercial headset, but you'll be starting off at $140+. |

I just want something that I can wear comfortably for several hours with some gel cups and be able to attach a radio to it. I gonna look at the HL, keep them coming! Thank you. |

Is this a special kind of microphone that you would use or is it analogous to the iPhone headphones that allows you to listen to music and talk on the phone? |

I've heard good things about Cod Red headsets, but no personal experience. You'd be looking at doing something like what unpleasant mentioned earlier though.
http://www.coderedheadsets.com/product-p/signal-21-k.htm + http://www.amazon.com/Howard-Leight-Impact-Electric-Earmuff/dp/B001T7QJ9O/ + http://www.amazon.com/SuperWhole-Speed-Stereo-Coiled-Spiral/dp/B0114A4STS/ and you're a hair under $100. I find the sound reduction on the Howard Leight to be inadequate for shooting; I use them for both range and airsoft use, but for an indoor range I put a set of Surefire earplugs under and just crank the volume level. One thing to note is the output from your UV-5R is on the 2.5mm plug (input is the 3.5mm), and the Howard Leight headsets have a 3.5mm input. You can't go straight from the radio to the headsets without an adapter (or a really weird cable). |

The speaker mic is like a cop mic, clipped to chest but with a 3.5mm to your headset to keep it discrete and quiet. All the plug up solutions for add on boom mics are non starters for serious use. They easily unplug, the 3.5mm speaked cable does too.
If you want something you would use in a life or death situation you will need a headset that has non removable boom mic and down lead preferably a Nexus stype plug. Then you want a dedicated ptt that is amplified with a downlead specific to your radio. Low end solutions get chewed up pretty fast. Such a set up is going to be several hundred dollars. The cop mic and 3.5 is a sub 100 buck solution that is far simpler than a boom mic conversion. I have one of those and would NOT recommend it. |

I think he was talking about something like this: http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41UX4wBicfL._SX425_.jpg Yep, this works just fine. I actually use one of these with my Icom V80 and Peltor Comtacs instead of the boom mic so I didn't have to drop $250 on a PTT. I found a U173 to 3.5mm cable (I have no idea where it came from, nor can I even find anyone that makes them) that feeds the audio to my headset and use the hand mic as a pseudo-PTT. It's mounted close enough to my face that I don't have to move to use it. Also, if anyone knows where I could find another U173 to 3.5mm cable that would be awesome. Apparently these things are unicorns. |
