Old, surplus ponchos , with waterproof coating peeling off due to age suck.

IMHO, GI ponchos sucked in even when new.  YMMV.

I like the poncho ok. Protects gear outside of clothes. What would you recommend in their place?

The old Heavy OD Green Vietnam issue ponchos were awesome.

SUPER tough and the waterproofing didn't delaminate like the newer ponchos...

I have GI ponchos bought 25 years ago that are like new.

My secret is Armor All every few years.

If you live near Raleigh, there's a surplus store at the state fairgrounds.  They'll most likely have what you are looking for.

They are all over ebay. Just do a search. Also hazard 4 has a fancy one.

While wearing or you mean stowed like say outside of a tent or something? If stowed, we were issued marpat tarps for that purpose.

We used ponchos to cover our head and ruck/weapon with the bottom half of our bodys in our bivy sack. Worked pretty well except in monsoons. Ive slept like that from hawaii to the Philippines and a lot of islands in between.

Its also how ive camped for the last 10 years. Im talking week to month long backpacking, hunting, canoe trips from ny to Maine including winter trips in the single digits.

It started to  getkinda cramped under a poncho with my dog. With a wife i broke down and got an 8x10 silny ripstop tarp when she started coming with me when we first met.

The old GI OD "heavy" ponchos will [I]definitely benefit from an ArmorAll application to both sides.  Will keep them from sticking to themselves, and so ripping-off the waterproof coating when they are unfolded/unrolled.
