I recently got a M83 chest rig and have been loving it for my AK, however I sometimes find that i'd prefer a micro rig to a full one.
I have an old chicom 4 cell style chest rig laying around and am thinking of turning it into a micro rig but don't know the best course of action to do so. I'd like 3 rifle magazines, 1 pistol magazine and some PALS webbing. I noticed the 2 middle mag pouches hold 2 mags each. Should I remove the other 2 magazine pouches and leave the 2 on the far left and in place of the mag pouches I remove, add some PALS?

I know a true micro rig would be better but I am currently low on funds so i'm looking for a project to do until I can afford a true micro rig.

Please leave any and all ideas or what you prefer in a micro rig (how much ammo, etc). Thanks

Someone had a thread on a Chinese 4 pouch that the modified, took off the grenade pouches. He did a good job but I don't have a link to the thread.

I currently have the 2 grenade pouches off and made it more narrow. Any recommendations on how many mags and how to store them? (double stacked, kangaroo, single, etc) Also would adding elastic around the pouches help much in the way of retention without the lids closed?

It might. I bought a used Paraclete 'kangaroo-style' triple shingle and when the kangaroo is stacked the elastic keeps the rifle mags in the pouches even with vigorous jumping and other vertical motions, but you'd have to play with tension to make it manageable. Relying on elastic for friction retention might not work with doubled mags in a pouch. I'd probably replace the metal pins and leather keepers with velcro for simplicity.

You could kangaroo the pistol mag pouches. I've seen these styles of rigs with PALS webbing on the shoulder straps over the pectorals, you could put them there too if a narrow rig is paramount. Play around with it, see what works.

There is quite a bit you can do to those to build a cost effective chest rig. I think making a micro rig out of one is a great idea. Chop the sides off and add some pistol pouches or PALS to the front of the rifle mags. The key is being able to do the tear down and mod work yourself. Once you figure shipping both ways and the work cost itself, modding one doesn't make sense anymore. Here are a few I have done in the past....

yes, these make great/cheap chest rigs for budget minded people who are crafty. i made a ton of these a few years ago. you can see how they progressed as i learned better techniques and simplified them.

^ Dang you built a pile of those. I think the 4 rifle/pistol mag is a great set up.

Looking to make a pistol magazine pouch for one side and i'm not looking to spend any extra money as of now. I had an idea to fold a length of 2 inch webbing in half, sew elastic around it and burn holes near the top to tie bungee cord for more retention. Would this be a good, simple, and fast access mag pouch? Thanks again for all of the pics and ideas.

As I said I have a nicer and better suited chest rig to hold 6 rifle mags so I wanted a minimalist micro rig without going out and dropping $100+ on one. That's why i'm modifying the chicom I have. I plan to learn what works and doesn't. I plan to use 3 of the 4 cells for 1 mag each and the 4th cell as a misc and medkit pouch. Small, simple, lightweight.
