Ok, I have a specific question and am open to more general advice as well. I've seen "what chest rig should I buy" threads but am still trying to slog through my options.

I am contemplating a minimalist chest rig which only real use would be a rifle/pistol course. I'd like to mount all handgun gear on my belt as this reflects the reality of my life as a responsible armed citizen with no real use for a full combat kit.

My specific question is: what kind of retention does the BCS LE rig have if I don't use the bungee tabs? Would I have to use a Kywi insert to avoid using the bungees?

Here are my thoughts so far, open to critique as the only load-bearing experience I have is law enforcement duty belts and airsofting on a budget over a decade ago.

Must have:
-Ability to carry 3-4 5.56 Pmags.
-At least 1 mag case needs to be easily accessible for speed reloads and stay open for easy re-insertion. I like Kywi inserts or other passive retention systems for this.
-Minimal bulk.
-Adjustable to ride high enough to clear belt-mounted handgun and handgun mags. I'm a short (5'6") guy too.
-No velcro flaps. My 2-point sling likes to snag on them and rip them open (discovered that on my old airsoft vest).
-Under $200. Even that's pushing it for gear I'll really only use at a class.
-Ability to mount Molle pouches if I decide to in the future, as well as a IFAK I have now.

Desirable:
-All mag pouches would be passive retention and remain open when empty (hence my question about the Beez). This is the only thing I really don't like about the Blue Force 10-speed system: I don't want to fight to refill the pouch.
-Price as close to $100 or lower as possible.
-A couple extra pouches to dump a Glock/TRL-1 and mags into in case I'm wearing the wrong or no holster. This would only come into play for home defense, which isn't really a role I see this rig fitting into, but might nice nonetheless.

So far, I have two options I'm deciding between.  The Beez linked above with the extra mag pouch option (I'd leave the outside pockets empty for pistol mags, flashlight, etc.) and possibly Kywi inserts to provide retention and keep empty pouches open for reloading.

If, however, I have to buy too many Kywis, I might be better off to buy up to this Esstac Bush Boar, as it functions similarly and comes with the Kywis included. More Molle surface area means that I might be able to mount my IFAK further back so it's less in my way.

If you're still reading, thanks for your attention. Thoughts?

I would never buy anything from Beez...they are liars.

I had a chest rig ordered and paid for...was sent an email confirming that chest rig shipped....after days of waiting on chest rig I contacted Beez and was told that my order went to a military order...so Beez took my order which I paid for in advance and they filled another order with my order.  Shitty way to do business...they were acting as if my chest rig went to the front line, which I find very hard to imagine since I had my order placed weeks prior and I got my email shipping notice.

I was in the military, so I understand that military should get priority, but I needed my chest rig for training course.  I don't like how Beez conducts their business...at the end of the day they are not the only game in town...and that crap CS isn't going to win me over.  Beez screwed me once and only once.

If I were you, I'd research as there are so many choices wthen it comes to chest rigs.  I like my Tactical Tailor rig along with my Eagle chest rig.  The Eagle chest rig I bought from Natchez was on clearance for like $45 and it's been a great chest rig.

I had a custom carrier built for my concealable armor. Excellent work and fast turn around. A+ from me.

I can't answer your specific question, but I did buy a Beez plate carrier for the woman. Quality work and fast shipping, I was happy.
