A few questions. The biggest threat I face is 7.62x39 steel core and regular and m193 and m855. Are level three plates enough?

I've been looking at getting steel here

http://thetargetman.com/?product=ar500-armor-flat-10x12-plate-set-test-do-not-publish

I've also have been looking at the level three stand alone or level 4 combination (level four when worn with soft armor).

It seems.if the threat most likely will be 25 yards or more away to go with level three? I'm not seeing level four plates that are multi hit rated.

Being that 193 is known to defeat steel and 855 is known to defeat 100% Polyethylene, I would only consider ceramic or composite plates like AMI Tac3s.

Level IV plates aren't rated for multiple hits because the NIJ test protocol is to stop 1 round of the test round. (30-06 AP. I think.)
Anything level III is by definition, multi hit because the protocol is six rounds of .308.

Level III armor is only designed to defeat Ball ammo, basically any normal powered FMJ round with a lead core. Steel core/tipped rounds while technically not "armor piercing" such as the M855 are known for defeating level III plate armor and the militarys equivalent the SAPI. If you want to be 100% sure your armor will stop a steel cored round you need a Level IV or ESAPI.

level IV are not multi hit rated for AP rounds but im sure they could easily stop multiple Ball rounds just like a level III can.

You can get a Sigma III+ or something along those lines to defeat most penetrator rounds like the M855 or AK steel core. Once you get up to .30-06 AP, you need a level IV but how realistic is that as a threat?

If thats your expected threat go for  level 4. Exceed the standard per se.

What kind of budget do you have?

Apparently the SAPI plate (and probably level IIl plates) is designed to stop M855 and M193. Really would only need to use a ESAPI of you were concerned about 30.06 or other AP rounds, especially the tungsten core rounds. Also there is a you tube video of a guy shooting a ESAPI with tungsten AP 5.45x39 (or so he claimed) and it stopped them, that round would be roughly equivalent to the M995

Can we get the OP to specify how he came to the conclusion of his most likely threats?

Personally, my PC is set up for SHTF/TEOTWAWKI. In my AO, i'm worried about 9mm/357mag/45auto, 12g birdshot, Wolf 556 or 762x39, and most inportantly - Fudd hunting rifles i.e. 140g remington corelokts out of a 7mmMag.

Usually we're pretty good about helping people ID their needs by talking about their endstate but clearly not in this thread. If the OP is a defense contractor going to the 'stan, then okay. But... if he's like a majority of the tac gear forum, he's prepping for a shitty day/week/month stateside.

ETA: I use lvl 4 stand alone lightweight triple curve shooter's cut plates from bulletproofme.com - $465 shipped for the pair, under 14lbs for stand alone .30-06 protection.

Do the Sigma plates defeat m193 in addition to m855?
