I'd like to pick up some basic load-bearing stuff.
I'm a civilian. Odds are (hopefully!) the stuff I buy will get thrown under a bed and never used other than maybe getting my ass kicked in a 3-gun match (if ammo prices come down). I'd like to keep my cost low. What I'd like to be able to carry is: - two or three USGI M16 mags with Magpul "ranger plates" - small first aid kit (6" compression bandage or two, tourniquet, bunch of gloves, and a pack of celox gauze) - holster - two pistol magazines - multitool Would surplus ALICE gear be a good place to start? If so, what's the best way to tell the difference between surplus gear or foreign knock-offs? Is it reasonable to expect to be able to attach all that weight to a belt, or should I be looking at some kind of vest or suspender rig to move weight to the shoulders? |

What you have listed is ok to put on a belt, and the suspenders part is on you to decide. Some people have problems with belts shifting or sagging, some don't. With that amount of stuff I would look at a semi rigid belt like a Brokos or HSGI padded belt. Otherwise it will be scrunching up and binding all over the place. I would look into a couple open top shingle mag pouches, a small utility pouch for the medical stuff, and 2-3 pistol mag pouches (the multitool will fit in a pistol mag pouch). Tactical Tailor is a decent manufacturer more on the cheaper side costwise, I would strongly suggest not going generic like condor or other chinese crap as I am of the buy once cry once philosophy. |

Head over to SKD, take your pick of gear they offer. For the med kit, I'd get a Dark Angel, which I don't believe SKD carries. Mag pouches I'd get ESSTAC. Is get a simple belt, like the Emdom-MM CM belt. You're not carrying that much gear, the padded belt would be a bit of overkill IMO. Any pistol mag pouch with flap will be perfect for carrying a multitool. For holsters, take a look at GCode.
Quite honestly, Alice gear sucked when it was issued to me and it still does. |

Sounds perfect for the HSGI Double Decker Combo mini chest rig.
Get the G Code OSH Kydex combo pack and a Wilderness Instructors belt...that should cover you requirements for abt $320. Or get a belt and some Tacos. I'm a fan of the chest rigs myself. Quoted:

I'd go here:http://www.greyghostgear.com/index.html for one-stop shopping at good prices. Probably get a split-front chest rig, and mount appropriate gear to it.
Alice 3-mag pouches are sturdy and cheap, and sort of obsolete, but you certainly could go that route to save money I think you'd be upgrading to something like I suggested above sooner rather than later, so I'd just skip the ALICE stuff and buy the stuff you'd likely end up with right off the bat.
