I have always avoided buying any "tactical gear" beyond a couple of nice packs for more of a Bug Out bag role. The idea always seems very Mall Ninja-ish or poser. Not knocking anyone else, just saying I am not .mil/LEO and have no "need" for that type of gear. Or at least I had myself convinced that I didnt. My opinion is changing.
I am getting more and more interested in getting a basic "chest rig" of some sort. Just in the interest of being prepared. I have guns, mags etc, and it is a job just getting everything together for a basic range trip. Wish I could just leave a lot of gear in my truck, but that is a no go. Additionally, I want to have some mags and other gear set up in a quick to access and wear chest rig. I'd love a nice plate carrier and all that, but I cannot justify the funds. However, surely I can get something that will allow me to put together a basic load out that I could grab in case the need ever arose. I am hoping you guys can point me in the right direction for some basic gear that will allow me to do this, while at the same time also taking advantage of the small amount of "gear" I already own. As I said, currently no PC or chest rig at all. I do own, as a BOB, an Eberlestock X3 Lo-Drag, I believe it is called. It has my current BOB contents, on which I am still working. I want to be able to carry 4-6 Pmags and maybe 2-3 G19 mags. Plus whatever you guys can convince me is necessary in a basic, "starter" rig. I know this is a newb question, but when it comes to chest rigs/PC's I am exactly that. |

SKD universal rig by Eagle. http://www.skdtac.com/PIG-UCR-Universal-Chest-Rig-p/pig.667.htm |

I have both of these:
Eagle M4 LE chest rig and USMC FLC Vest You might be able to find the FLC cheaper, that was just the first one that popped up for me. Both are fairly inexpensive but good quality. |

Heres what I have, I use one for my get home rig also. Pockets will hold 6 magazines and the 2 lower ones will hold a small 1st aid kit and some other stuff.

OP I'm currently putting together a FLC rig for range fun/SHTF. Like you I've never had much tactical gear but decided to get something just in case. Hitting up the online surplus stores I've spent less than $100 for a basic rig. Even if I add an IFAK & surplus camelbak (which I probably will)I'll still be under $200. |

That's the new one made by Patrol Incident Gear. It looks to be as good. I have one of the old Eagle ones. It's a good setup. |

IMHO, the S.O.E. micro rig is a great choice for your application. He will make you custom colors and offer left/right handed use.

I had one of these and sold it pretty quick. The retention on the mag pouches only work with two mags in place. With one mag in the pouch it was very loose. I didn't have any confidence in mag retention with having only one mag in the pouch, so I sold it. |

Because I think you are looking for inexpensive, if you plan to take a couple classes and have a piece of kit that spends most of its life hanging in the closet; don't rule out condor chest rigs, for under $40 they are a good buy in my opinion.
I have ran mine in a 2 day class and plan to use it in future classes, it worked great and is very comfortable. |

| ATS Low Pro for simple chest rig, 3 X rifle mags, two X small upright GPs, and a slit pocket int he body of the panel...everythign you need and nothing you don't...AND it keeps you from piling all kinds of extraneous bullshit on it...if all you're really looking for is a simple chest rig. |

If I someday add a PC, will these all work with, or only some? Would like modularity. If modularity and plate carrier compatibility is your end goal, check out the PIG Systema line: http://www.skdtac.com/SearchResults.asp?Extensive_Search=Y&Search=systema |

THIS
found here or here Both examples above are about $10 over going price, but you get the idea. One of my vest/belt configurations is turned around. Meaning the kovac clip is facing the back. Not particularly fond of since the way to don & remove is over the head versus zip/unzip. but does serve the purpose of not unfastening at the wrong time. Come to think of it, that was the only vest I have configured that way, while the remaining are "stock" configuration. |

Personally I really like the Eagle CP223, which is a really basic, minimalist chest rig along the lines of the original chicom rack. Four AR magazines + two pistol magazines. Lightweight, comfortable, easy to get prone. Folds up nice and compact. Cheaper than modular rigs.
I've used the SKD/Eagle Universal rigs before, but I never liked the straps. I found eight magazines was a bit more bulk and weight than I had any need for, and I didn't care for the retention system. That said, the SKD/PIG UCR looks like an improvement over the original and merits consideration. |
