Gear noob here, I just ordered a 2-pc TT MAV and 2 TT triple-mag pouches in ACU.  Is this pattern out of date?  Is it not effective?  I notice the newer type patterns like multicam seem to be more expensive.  Is there a reason the other patterns are more expensive or is it just because "newer is cooler?"  Sorry for the dumb question...

There should be at least 1,283,456 threads on AR15.com alone regarding the Army pattern vs. everything else.  Check them out.  There is an element of "cool guy" to multicam but it is quite an effective pattern in many climates.

Thanks, I did perform a search, but nothing came up....  Am i not doing it properly?  Manually browsing the archives I cam across this thread:  BDUs  This should be pinned/sticky'd.

I like to mix colors and camo patterns on all my stuff.

It makes people think that I am either super tacticool....

Or a complete and total idiot that doesn't realize his shit doesn't match.

I'm good with either.

It totally depends on your terrain and where you are.  If you are in the desert (such as Iraq) there is little brush, and the ACU does well.   If you are in woods with some green and tan, then Multicam is amazing.   I have all my gear in multi-cam and it is good for woodlands, grasslands, and even some urban areas at night.  It seems to reflect more browns and tan when in an environment where tans and browns are present.  Very nice camo.  See the pictures below.  Both are multicam but depending on your surroundings, it blends into everything.

The search is tricksy.  It defaults to searching the previous 24 hours.  Unless you're looking for something somebody's posted within the day, you have to specify that you want the search to cover a longer period of time.

I picked up a couple ACU MAV's too, and I realized something:

The ACU portion will easily be covered once you fill it with your pistol/rifle mag pouches, first aid, etc.  While I wouldn't recommend filling every single PALS loop, it's pretty easy to cover the majority of the MAV with whatever camo patterned pouches you want.  Leaving probably just a couple lines of ACU under your armpits or so.

Not a perfect solution, but for the price Grey Ghost is selling the MAV's, I certainly cant complain.

The ACU's UCP pattern (grey digital) is regarded to be one of the worst, when compared to other alternatives out there.  Personally, I'd give Rit dye a try if I were you.  All my civilian gear is in BDU / OD(low speed, I know)
