| which malice clip do i get to replace alice clips? small? is that correct? |
| Malice and Alice aren't compatible, or at least they're weren't designed to be despite of the similarity in the name. Malice clips work with MOLLE / PALS type systems. That being said, I've used the small ones that came with a pouch as a carrier for my iPhone. They slip over a spec-ops belt without any problems, so they might work over the old web belts, but they won't hold things in place. They will slide around. |

which malice clip do i get to replace alice clips? small? is that correct? Generally speaking, the Small MALICE clip is used to replace the ALICE clip. Whether or not this is feasable depends on the length and width of the fabric channel in which the ALICE clip currently resides. If the existing channel is too narrow, or too long, the MALICE won't fit. It is true that the MALICE clip can be trimmed-down a bit in width, but this is something of a PITA, and reduces its' strength––not that it needs a great deal, but still...... The Small MALICE clip is about 27/32" wide, and 3/32" thick. Small MALICE clips have TWO latching points, meaning that the length of the area enclosed within the MALICE clip can be either about 2 15/16", (three rows of PALS/MOLLE webbing side-to-side) or about 2 1/2", which is the width of most GI pistol belts. As mentioned above, there can be side-to-side movement of the pouch/MALICE clip assy. In practice, you will find that most attachment points are also capture points, in that little side-to-side movement is possible. The exception is belts, and I suspect the shorter MALICE length is to reduce movement on pistol belts. Tactical Tailor, the inventor of the MALICE clip, offers devices which velcro onto Duty belts (with matching velcro) to prevent movement when using MALICE clips. Maxpedition makes a sort of MALICE clip item from webbing and buckle, and it is thinner, probably at least as strong/durable, but a bit of a fumble to remove/detach. Blackhawk also makes their own MALICE-like device, but I have not heard any good reports about it, and it seems to be often on-sale, FWIW. Perhaps some like them, and I have not heard about it, I dunno, and haven't tried them myself, unlike the Maxpedition and MALICE. Other alternatives to the MALICE clip are one-way wire-ties,550 cord, and woven nylon twine, which is thinner than 550 cord. IIRC, Supply Captain sells both 550 cord and woven nylon twine. If using cord or twine, learn how to knot it up so the knot is secure, but not impossible to untie. Even so, you will probably need an awl to untie the knot, but you probably have an awl on your Swiss Army knife and/or multitool. If using the wire ties (at any hardware store) first experiment using cheapo white ties. The reason the cheap ties are, well, cheap, is that they are not formulated with UV stabilizers, and will degrade with exposure to sunlight. Mebbe not so good in extreme cold, either. Once you have finished experimenting, buy some black, outdoor-certified ties with metal (as opposed to plastic) ratchets, and replace the cheapos. A little measuring and it becomes apparent which length wire ties to buy. No point in buying 3' ties and wasting money. Make sure to trim off any excess strap material flush with the ratchet body. If one simply nips off excess strap material with wire-cutters or scissors, the remaining little bit projecting from the ratchet body will have sharp edges, which can cut you, or poke holes in your gear. So, use a sharp razor knife to trim down to the ratchet body, and you are GTG. |

Good reply raf....if I recall correctly, those Maxpedition thingies are called Tac Ties, somewhat bulky and awkward, but I like them in some applications better than MALICE clips. I've never been a fan of MALICE clips anyways....I greatly prefer the cloth PALS attachments that come on gear like ATS(sewn into the pouch)
OP, while not what you're looking for.............why are you replacing your ALICE clips? If you are using ALICE gear, they work fine. It is likely that most of your ALICE gear won't fit MALICE clips, as the channels are much too small. |

Almost forgot the "ALICE Adaptors" which are GI issue. These contraptions have MOLLE tabs on one side, and channels for Alice clops on the other. Available for $.90 each at UncleSams Warehouse, IIRC.
Not my choice for most applications, BUT they also have grommets which allow old-style GI bayonet scabbards (and other stuff) to be mounted on MOLLE panels, and indispensible in that regard. |

I'm at the point where I need to buy more alice gear to complete the setup I have now or ditching it and going with newer stuff.
