Well I have been reading and watching these threads for a while now, and i have see all kinds of PSAGT and skateboard style helmets, however i have not really see any old school stuff. So does any one use any of the old steel pot helmets like the M1 for their bug out gear? I can really see only one downside to doing so, the weight! But i think the usefulness and protection values would cancel that out! what thinks the hive?
oh yah and if you do use them PICS!!!!! |

not to mention that old steel pot doesn't match the rest of my gear. There are a lot of videos and pictures of people shooting the old helmets with rifles and pistols with pretty crappy results. Not to mention the newer helmets have great suspension systems that don't give you a head ache right off the bat. After a few hours though....

I've shot a couple steel pots. They stop some pistol bullets. I can attest to that statement, however I wouldn't want to be the one with my head in that helmet. I'd take a used PASGT over a steel pot any day. I once had a video from the Discovery Channel in which they shot at an old steel pot in real time with a 9mm round and it didn't penetrate. I will try to dig it out if I can find it and post it. |

I dont like empty guns pointed at me, let alone loaded ones....I dont even like to look down the bore of a gun with a bullet in there, even if I put the bullet in there, the gun is on safe, no hammer in the gun, and the firing pin is modified to not allow it to strike the primer.
I know of a guy who was cleaning a handgun/revolver, that was loaded and it Discharged....the bullet went through the wall and hit a guy in the HEAD in the adjoining apartment that was sitting down at the table. Dead Right there. |

Service auto rounds defeated it if fired at a close to 90 degree angle and the helmet was anchored well. |
