hey everyone..I am seriously thinking about buying a helmet (probably from TNVC) however im having a hard time justifying it for a civilian. I am former military and did a short stint in the special operations world and really liked the idea of having the "Skateboarding" helmet. Does anyone have these for SHTF situations and train with them. For me the helmet was a serious piece of kit that was needed when training and running operations. Opinions? pictures? anything is welcome.

I know it's cool to not wear a helmet at all but I've seen a guy taken out of a fight from a head injury that could have been prevented by wearing a helmet. It's kind of like eye pro, it's not going to stop a round, but there are plenty of things in combat that can cause injury and it sucks to be taken out of it from something stupid. For SHTF? I don't know... If you're already geared up in a plate carrier and armed with an M4 you might as well have the helmet too I guess. The biggest reason I'd have one is just for the night vision use. |

i like to approach this from the perspective that ill be working alone and therefore need all the advantages i can get. if were talking about gunfights or static defense i say why not have a ballistic helmet? it will do everything the skater brainbucket will and more. the ONLY disadvantage is weight. with the right pads, helmet cut and suspension system comfort is not an issue.
get a good helmet that you like or you feel fits your percieved needs the best. then work from there. some questions to answer are do you need ballistic protection, or will a skateboard helmet do? do you plan on using electronic hearing protection or communication devices like peltor? if so you might need a different cut than a MICH or PASGT are you going to run night vision devices? and if so, what kind? you may need different mounting systems and 550cord loops for your NVG dummy cords do you need a helmet cover? does it have velcro on it? what is the best pattern for your area, woodland, multicam, desert, snow? do you need IFF? a strobe light attached, reflective IR material, lume tape, etc. will you be working indoors or outside at night and need a helmet mounted light? surefire, hardcase, streamlight etc. are you going to be working in windy areas like out of a vehicle, the bed of a technical or a turret? you might need goggles and retention straps. |

Thanks for the replies...
After giving it a little thought over the past few days I have come to the conclusion that ballistic protection probably isnt warranted. In any SHTF situation I can imagine myself in (Central Indiana) I dont see gunfights as being a big problem. However there is always a chance, I just dont think the added weight / price is justified. I can see the need for bump protection in any situation I can think up. TNVC has a great deal on the Skater type helmets with an added rail for a light and NVG plate on the front. Fortunately I already have several rhino mounts here at the house. I do wear electronic hearing protection and have capabilities to use ear set comms so the cutout ears are a plus. In most any situation I see myself on foot more then anything so something light and easy to use comes first. As I said my short time in the 3/75 ranger regmt taught me alot about what kit is needed and what is taking up space and weighing you down. Im just trying to apply what i have figured out to the civilian side of my life. If anyone has any pictures of their kit to include their head gear I would love to see how everyone has them set up. mike |

After giving it a little thought over the past few days I have come to the conclusion that ballistic protection probably isn't warranted... mike It's good to see someone actually making a decision based on reality rather than fantasy. A lot of folks [of late] have decided on following some sort of masturbatory fantasy that zombies will abduct black-market nuclear weapons. This of course, will force the United States into another Civil War during a global power outage when the United States faces complete economic collapse. They're all set though, ready to take on the Mongolian horde with their Berkey water filters and bug-out-bags. Sorry, I kinda blacked-out there for a second. If you get an Ops Core chinstrap, I'd recommend an "H" rather than an "X" for a hockey hat. The straps on an "X" are just set too closely to mate up well with the holes in the back of most helmets. Besides, you'll enjoy more side-to-side stability with the wider fit. I actually ended up going with a ACH because it was (sadly) much easier to find a ACH that fit my giant melon than a skateboarding helmet. *ETA* ...and I've used it a couple of times when climbing ladders to chop off tree limbs with a chainsaw, and it's already saved me once. It looked dorky, but I'd rather look like a dork than have a hole in my head. |

You write as though there is something wrong with that... doesn't categorizing the fantasy as being "masturbatory" make it more legit? There is still something special about choking yourself to the brink of blacking out while wearing nothing but adult diapers and a tin foil hat. |

Not to hijack, but there was a vendor here who was selling the upgrade kits for the K-pots at a nice discount. There was as sticky in GD about it that's gone now, and nothing showed up in a search.
Anybody know or remember who that was and/or know if the deal's still going? |

IIRC it was for .mil & .gov, pad sets running about $40/set. Thanks for the linkage though. If I can't find the others I'll be hitting OA up. |

Luckily, I remembered sending the OP of the thread an IM about PD/EMS folks and receiving a reply. The thread was in April, they were Skydex setups. Awaiting a reply to see if he has any left in stock. ETA - Just got an IM. Nope. |

I have two Kevlar PASGT's I've had for about 10 years. One has an upgraded chassis system and a Riot shield. Swat guy must have been getting out of the business. I got it for $50. Well three, i got a new small one for $25 for my wife. Probably will never have cause to need them but i have them anyway. I got a woodland cover for the green one, since my OTV is old school woodland.
A buddy of mine gave me the aluminum NVG mount for the front of combat helmets but it only fits the flat front ones. So I just refinished it and installed it on a shelf. |
