What are those OD blanket looking scarfs that operators wrap around their face and head? I would like to pick on up but have no idea what to look for.
Thanks |

| What purpose do they serve? I imagine they are a garment that is designed to help keep the hot desert sun from burning your skin and to provide some protection for your head/neck during a sandstorm. I would suspect if you live in an arid, desert like environment it would be a beneficial piece of clothing. But if you life in any other type of environment, would it serve any purpose? |

I ended up going with an adult version of this kind of face mask because I wanted something that was more structured. TAD's shemagh looks cool IMO. |

Helps break up the sillhouette of the head as well I'd imagine. I have one from the 90's - part of a costume I had. They do actually work well in the winter. |

My wife uses one to stay warm. She also likes how the shades of purple in the scarf match up with her parka. If you're an Amerikki that cares about how it's pronounced, just say it without the "g" sound at the end. "SHIM-ah". |

I'm no "high speed operator" or anything, but I've got a shemagh that I got as a freebie. They're pretty useful if you apply some creativity. One use I haven't seen mentioned yet: I like to hose mine down with bug repellent in the summer, and wrap it around my neck all the way up to my mouth. Keeps the mosquitoes off my face without having a lovely combo of insect repellent and sweat dripping into my eyes. Makes time spent in the woods in warm weather a little more enjoyable.
I've also found that they can make for a decent improvised sling pad, if you have problems with your sling digging into your neck. I'm sure that some just use them as a "tacticool" fashion accessory, but shemaghs can be useful even for us lowly civilians. |

Quoted: The plural of "Scarf" is "Scarves." I wear one all winter. It's in my clan tartan, MacClaren. On my mother's side. http://i49.tinypic.com/i1w7pz.jpg Just be glad we don't have these folks around: [Fashion Police] OH... MY.... GAWD...... Khaki hat... OD hoodie... Flecktarn "Ach, Mein Lager I gehPuken" jacket... the oldy moldy Woodland BDU[ pants... Do you know why they call them woodland? The soldiers with half of any fashion sense wished the color blind aliens that gave them to the morons in Natick would land and take them all back to whatever planet they came from... ICK ICK ICK It's the tactical equivalent to wearing polka dots with plaid. As far as your scarf? It's a family thing... I understand... but unless you're invading Tartania, leave it for your Burberry and Harris Tweed. My advice to you? Pick a pattern... any pattern, as long as it's just one... and stick with it." I have to go bleach my eys now... <prances off> [/Fashion Police] |

"SHIM-ah". كوفية is how you pronounce it and it's like "kufeeya," this is what Arabs call the scarf (typically red and white or black and white). People call the mil scarfs shemaghs, not sure where the word originates. The orange and white, purple and white, etc scarfs are what hipsters wear. Just call these scarfs "trendy." I think most people wear them because they think they look cool. There are better materials out there, like silk or wool, as someone else mentioned. |

I carried a small piece of my family's tartan when I was overseas. |
