So I've read about warbelts and chest harnesses and such. I'm trying to decide what I want to do for my first 3gun match.

Really I just want something to get me through my first match. Don't want to spend hundreds of bucks.

I can get the USGI FLC pretty cheap, or should I just get a belt/holster? I need a holster for a G17, couple of AR mag holders and a couple of pistol mag holders. What about shotgun reloads?

Also, what is the advantage of a leg holster? The rule says "belt must be worn at waist level".

If you get a belt and holster, that means you'll need magazine pouches... you'll quickly be spending money where you may not want to or not, depends on what you "need".

You might be better of get a harness of some kind, simple load carriers like the USGI FLC, HSGI Popper, TT Mini-Mav will do. GIves you your AR mag holders and you have PALS webbing to install some mag holders for your G17. Shotgun pouches are plenty but you might be better suited with a but stock or rail shell case. But there are shotty specific shell pouches to find, all the sponsors of this site have them as well as others.

Leg holsters depend on your style but if you're not wearing body armor I would avoid the leg hoster and go with a hip holster. Leg holsters free up space on the torso and chest rigs but they do put a limit on your legs. You'll either cinch thme down so tight that you apply a tourniquet to yourself or you have them loose and its a dangerous object. Plus the travel distance for chaning weapons is much greater from a leg to hip. I wear leg holsters only when I'm in body armor because I front load all my magazines and have them high on my chest, no room for a chest mounted holster. If you're not used to drawing, holstering, off hand draws, and such from a leg holster I would advise against it.

Amongst 3-gunners there is a general consensus that belt rigs are faster than chest rigs (though a chest rig is OK if that's what you want to run for other reasons). As you are just starting out, I suggest a belt rig.

If you are on a budget, start spending the money on a GOOD belt, like the Wilderness Instructor Belt - the belt is the basis upon which you will build, and cheaping out here is something you will regret. As for holsters, mag pouches etc, a great budget choice are the molded products from BladeTech: pistol holster (choose from right or left handed, obviously), AR15 mag holder, G17 mag holder - one of each should suffice to start with. As for shotshells, the choice of carrier depends on whether you will load 3-4 shells at a time with your weak hand, or 1 shell at a time with your strong hand (there are pros and cons to both approaches)... to start with, run with a cheap dump pouch until you have watched/tried both loading techniques and are ready to drop significant $$$ on the right setup (either shell caddies or bandoliers & sidesaddles).
