The NIJ test for Level IV is a single hit with .30-06 AP ammo.  If someone claims multi-hit capability, make them show you test results that you can verify.  FYI, such a plate is likely to be VERY heavy, and will be very expensive.  HDPE won't stop AP rounds, and if made of Armored Steel, will weigh more than you'll want to carry.  It will be out of ceramic or a ceramic/Boron/etc composite.  Such plates, as rated/tested for NIJ, run about 8lbs.  If someone makes a verifiable multi-hit plate, I am guessing it will tip the scales at about 10-11 pounds (min) for a 10x12 plate.  I would be surprised if anyone makes (or can make?) a multi-hit side-SAPI plate because of the dimensions involved.

The E-SAPI is multi hit IIRC.

Since I don't deal in those, I had forgotten about that.  You are correct...E-SAPI plates are multi-hit rated.

However my statements about being a ceramic composite and expensive hold true....and if you can find a company that carries true E-SAPI plates that will sell to civilians (if this applies to the OP).  I know that my cost, as a dealer, for E-SAPI plates from my vendor is almost twice what I sell the standard NIJ plates/ceramic plates for.
