So I have to buy a holster for an academy. It must be a duty belt holster... even a level 1 is fine, does not matter about the retention as long as it has ANY retention. I WANT a thigh rig. I would like to buy something that can be converted to use either way. I really like the Safariland duty rigs and thigh holsters. Is there some kind of unit that can be configured either way? What am I looking for? I dont want a duty holster thats worthless after I finish my academy and if I could get a thigh holster that can be worn directly on a belt I could have what I need for now and what I want for later without wasting money.
What am I looking for? Does such a beast even exist? |

| +1 on for the Safari Land holsters. Myself and most of my fellow LEO bro's run that system. We use duty belt holsters for standard patrol work. Special details and operation, we run outter carriers and most of us go to the drop leg mount. Pretty good protection but with a quick draw. |

Safariland 6280.....but....
You say you need it for an academy. I guess more information is needed. Are you a new hire to an LE agency? What are the academy requirements? What are the policy requirements of the agency? What reasons do you have for wanting a thigh rig so bad? What will your duties be? I.E. patrol, or something where you will be dealing with wearing external armor for long periods of time making entries? Do you have back problems or is there some medical reason that requires you to use a thigh rig? Your post screams inexperience unless you can come up with some real good reasons for what you want. If you're looking for a Gunslinger/CDI (Chicks Dig It) factor, well, some Sgt hopefully will get you squared away RIGHT quick before you screw up a career before it even starts. If you're working patrol, a thigh rig hangs down much too low to properly do weapon retention. You will learn weapon retention at the academy you say you're going to. Its hard enough to hang on when it's on your hip. It's virtually impossible to hang on AND keep on your feet when its on your thigh. A thigh rig is meant for getting a holster below external/Tac armor. Those that have worn it know how hard it is to be able to get stuff on ones belt. Hence, lowering it. The 6280 is the mid-ride that I currently wear and a huge number of cops currently wear. The 6285 will lower the holster 1.5 inches if you need a lower holster if you have long arms or something and it makes it more comfortable. Then, get a seperate 6004 and belt rig for any duties where you might need/want the thigh rig. I'd leave the duty belt alone once you get the main holster on. It will be a PITA to try and switch them out all the time and not very practical. I'm hoping you don't take offense to any of this, but I see new guys all the time that are in huge need of guidance and lack of supervisors to deliver it. |

Let me clarify. I need a belt holster of any type for my police academy (I must buy it). I will be provided a duty holster for duty when I am working. I want the academy holster to be convertable to a thigh rig for my personal use... for playing with, for CDI, for training with body armor, whatever. This has NOTHING to do with a duty rig. My duty holster has to be high polish or basket weave. I want something matte for my fun holster and the acaedmy instructor does not give a shit about the holster's finish. These are different things. The academy requires only level 1 and on belt. It will be permanatly converted after the academy to a thigh rig. I just didnt want to waste money on a belt rig when I wanted to buy a Safariland thigh rig anyway. I have to have a level 2 or above for duty, this has nothing to do with a duty holster.
I think I have my answer, thanks guys. Oh, final question... where is a good place online to buy? The local police supply is like 20% high on EVERYTHING. |

I got the Safariland 6365. It took me 2 days to decipher and figure out the entire Safarland line and know what all the model codes meant and what was compatible with what.
Mine is the combo ALS (only available in the 6300 series) with the SLS hood of the 6200 series. The 6280 is standard height and I prefer the 1.5" drop height of the 6285 or in the 6365. I am going to be going with the new MOLLE system when available so I can swap it with ease between belt side and a 6004-10 or 6005-10, single leg strap, high ride thigh rig... the 6004/6005 double leg strap set up is too low IMO. GT distributors had the ONLY 6300 series holster for my set up in the country (I checked at least 15 vendors) and I was willing to get ANY holster and swap the mounting plate to create a 6365. The reason I wanted the 6300 was because I have a P226R with a X200 light. The 6200 series without the ALS will not secure the pistol if the light is not attached. I wanted the option to go either way and the ALS locks the gun in place with no light with no issues. GT Distributors was excellent, found the only one they had in stock that matched my fit, color, handedness and mounting height, and it arrived LESS THAN 24 hours after ordering it and I only got the standard $12.95 shipping. It was a 6365-7742-131. Best holster I have ever seen. Now I have a problem... It does not fit my CTC lasergrip. Im going to start a thread to see who has dremeled their holster to make a CTC grip fit and how best to do it. |

The Safariland 6280 can be converted to a 6004 by removing it from the belt plate and mounting it on the leg shroud. +1 I just ordered a mid ride Safariland Raptor holster for this reason. I'll be getting the 6004 low profile drop panel for it. i gotta ask. you said you got a screamin deal. from where? |

Holster was new with tags. Now I jut have to get either the 6004 shroud of the 6285 drop extension and then fab up a leg strap for a high-rise thigh mount. |
