does your slr have the Vertical grip?

you can buy Domke padded inserts and put them in just about any bag too. For work I used Tamrac bags and swear by them. the 614 and 613 are hard to beat.

are you looking for more discreet carry?

it's a nikon d40x with a little grip...
I checked the tamrac bags but they look kinda bulky and scream "expensive camera"
was looking for something more discreet with tactical colors ...that's why I was thinking Maxpedition.

I checked out a couple maxpedition bags at a local shop and wasn't to happy with how they would work to lug camera gear.

Hey you need to get out and shoot with us up in Racine

My lightweight kit is a Nikon D40, 18-55mm, and SB-400.  It goes with me everyday in a Kifaru Malice Claymore pouch turned murse, via repair buckles and an old strap.  The bag holds the body and lens, with smaller pouches holding the flash, charger and cord.  It also holds a small FAK, basic survival kit, SF G2, multi-tool, wind shirt, and some energy bars.  Very sleek, tossable package - that's if you don't mind walking around with a purse, of course.

My D200 with MB grip, SB-800, lenses and accessories go in a Crumpler.  I've thought about investing more in a dedicated camera bag like Think Tank, but for that money I would rather get a Kifaru Tailgunner or ATS Cobra and have more diverse uses available.

Domke makes a great bag.
This is my F3-X.
Not a huge bag but it will hold a full SLR kit.

First off, I'm not a pro photographer.  I just like to take pictures, and I like to have a camera with me.  I was already carrying the Claymore as an EDC bag, and when I got the D40 kit I tried a holster bag and didn't like it.  So I shuffled things around in the Claymore and found the results much more satisfying for me.  Sorry, it's black, hopefully the Crye 330D fabric will make up for my transgression.

Here's a picture of the loaded bag next to a Nalgene bottle for scale.

The buckles came from a repair kit I bought at REI.  They are National Molding Stealth, 1 inch, same as what came on my 4 yr. old black Marauder.  The strap is an old camera bag strap, with some slides from the repair kit.

Here's the camera nestled in the bag.

The contents of the bag.  Various small pouches for charger, power cord, and SD cards.  The SB-400 came with its own neat pouch.  The TT Accessory Pouch 1H holds a basic FAK.  The HSGI Nalgene pouch holds a basic survival kit, flashlight with extra batteries, multi-tool, and energy bars.  Old Tasco pouch contains a Marmot wind shirt.

A wonderful little camera kit.

No problem.  I forgot to add, the way I have it set up, the bag is full.  One or two of the smaller pouches would have to go to make room for the 55-200mm that you mentioned.

any padding inside the bag ?

i found an old SC EOD pouch that I could set up as a bag.

No padding.  What I do is arrange the pouches so that it surrounds the camera and lens.  The body and lens barrel are plastic and light, so I'm not really worried.  I used to have a D70, and that thing could take a beating.  The only worry I have is that the lens mount is plastic, so if I dropped the camera on the floor, the mount could break off.  But in that case, I would probably have more problems than just the mount.

I have that EOD bag, I think it would work great as well.  Plus it has extra pockets and sleeves on the inside already.
