I'm looking at these (yes, not issue, but close enough for my budget)..

gen 1 is two layer.  outer shell with bonded waterproof/breathable membrane, with a hanging liner.  gen 2 is three layer.  outer shell with waterproof/breathable membrane, and a mesh liner bonded directly.  the gen 2 usually have either a stowable or removable hood, and are lighter.
