The sell the same setup without buttpack for 20 dollars, added one to an order I just placed with them. I prefer going without the buttpack and just going with more pouches on the belt, easier when using a backpack. |

Have you guys tried stuffing any items besides magazines into the mag pouches (the 3 x 30rnd pouches)?

I'm kinda bummed that my new FAL bayonet was covered up by the buttpack in one of the pics. Oh well...

OST because I still have sh*tloads of ALICE stuff in my basement and in my 'rents attic from the 90's.

Those two boxes on the MOLLE things on either side of the buttpack, what are they? |

Yeah--take out one 30 rounder, you can put a camera (using "110" film) in its place quite easily. |

I guess that answeres the question. I discounted that as a possibility seeing that the vest in question can hold eight magazines alone. I wonder, what might be put in a butt pack. |

Once I finish assembling my "spare" ALICE rig, I'll post a list of all my extra ALICE shit in the EE so y'all can dig through it. I just finished a big inventory and cleanout, and I had way more than I thought.
And of course I'll post pics of the rig, along with my old-school modified ALICE large ruck. |

I used to run the '56 "H" harness instead of the "Y" style. More comfortable.
I also used to motorcyle camp with my Deuce pack & frame. I would take the pad off my short sissy bar, and replace it with the pack frame (with a 1/4" hole drilled in the crossbars), and mount the pack backwards on the frame using the pad screw. Put my tent and IC sleeping bag in front of it? PResto - padded backrest. Great for road trips (and cheap). Never got around to making Alice ruck saddlebags though... |

LOVE THE SETUPS RangerStew & 234747!!! Couple Questions... RangerStew - What pouch are you using for the 5-AK Mag Pouches??? I've only got TWO little gripes with the ALICE system: I'm working on an ALICE setup for a 2nd Line gear setup for my AK... Problem is that ALICE systems don't carry Armor Plates as well... So my 1st Line gear needs to be primarily a MOLLE setup. An ALICE LBE / LBV setup ties up your waist with equipment / pouches, and there's no longer a COMFORTABLE way to use a waist belt for a large pack - And if you DO lower your ALICE LBE and use it in conjunction with a large pack it limits your access to the pouches & stuff on the belt... 234747 - I LOVE how you combined your setup to include MOLLE & ALICE gear! That's a VERY nice setup, and the thing I love about it is that it's both functional, and low-cost! Some of the MOLLE setups get up there in costs *FAST*!!! |

Also, with my last ALICE Setup, a friend of mine told me about how the Airborne were attaching them in the 80's... Usually they were attached first with a Zip Tie, and some loops of 550 Paracord, and then they would stick a thin strip/loop of OD Green Duct Tape around the Ziptie & 550cord to hold it all together. I tried this on my last ALICE rig, and it worked GREAT! It was MUCH more comfortable than getting poked in the sides with those clips, and it was also much quieter! |

What's the best method to attach an accessory designed to fit on a regular belt (holster, leatherman pouch, etc)?

Hummm? I used two loops of 550 cord both times I was at Bragg, though I do not hold that my way was the only way, just that this is what my TL's and SL's taught my when I was a young private. It worked, so I didn't change. When I got to the BB (Berlin Brigade), I was looked at strangely for my "modifications" to "issue" gear. |
Yeah, I'm not really meaning that was the ONLY way to go about it... It's just the way that he taught me (and learned himself in the field)... He was in the 101st, IIRC, technically the father of a girl I used to date. We still talk, email, and shoot (once in a blue moon) even though I've long since broken up with his daughter. He was a cool guy!
Went ROTC in college in the 60's, and fought in 'Nam starting in 1968, Stayed in until the mid-70's. Was brought back into service doing some 'Consultant' work around '82 (he didn't say what he did then). That guy was a tough-as-nails hardcore MF'er. I recall one frightful day I was 'gettin some' from his daughter in her bedroom (without a locking door). He came home early from the skeet range, walked down the hall with his Remy870, I heard the case unzip, the slide racked just outside the bedroom door "I'm HOME!" One thought raced thru my head - OH S#IT!!! He then walked into the next room where he reloads his shotshells, clicked on his radio & started churning out some ammo... Later on I was talking with him, and he said, "Yeah, I knew what was up. I was your age once! Don't worry - I just wanted to mess with you a bit." He once saw I had my AR-15 and old ALICE LBE setup in the trunk of my car (my BoB at the time), and said, "That's a good idea, Kid! I should get an AR-15, and another LBE again. Never thought I'd own one since I didn't think I'd need one outside of the Army. But with the way things are going these days you just don't know." Now he's got a BoB/LBE, and an AR-15 'Truck Gun' all modded the way he likes. |

Riddle me this, Batman; what armor would you use with ALICE and how would it change your rig?
i love alice gear but now with what i do and have gear for its honestly not practical. i still have some and i dont know why! and to address the whole "what if we went to nam again?" yes our boys and myslef included would have to wear the vest and gear but you can bet money that those damn kevlar pannels would be out of the vest in no time! and guys would be wearing more plate carriers. hell i know a lot of guys that do that NOW
specwargear
Lots of modified LBV's on that page. After having used the ALICE/LBV , IBA & IOTV , I still prefer the ALICE. If armor is required , it can be worn over a plate rack . Mention was made about what would the Army would do in jungle terrain - probably the worst case for the soldier. |
I like ALICE gear, but it does have MANY shortcomings.
I used an ALICE setup a fair bit before going with a MOLLE setup chest rig (It's the MOLLE Recon Vest on top of the page you linked & without the back plate carrier)- no comparison! BOTH have their shortcomings, but the ability to comfortably carry a Pack with waist strap is infinitely better for covering a longer distance with a pack, and carrying most of your other gear on your chest. The weight of the pack on your backside/waist, and the weight of your mags/ammo/equipment/gear/armor on your front side even things out BEAUTIFULLY! That means you're able to STAND UP STRAIGHT when walking/running, and you don't need to slump forward to keep yourself from falling backward under all the weight like you do with an ALICE setup. When turning, your center of gravity is still around your waist/midsection, and you can turn like normal without a lot of dead weight on your back throwing things off and having to sling around your load awkwardly. If you don't need Armor, a modified ALICE LCE is a great option, and it's currently an extremely LOW COST option as well! I've kept pretty much all of my ALICE gear, and it's still sitting in a box. I should modify all of it, and whip up a decent backup LCE setup... It could come in handy someday. |

I'm looking for advice about my large alice pack...
I'd like to make it more comfortable....are TT Super Straps and Super Belt worth the money? TIA |
Yes, the TT belt and straps are a huge plus.
Then use a chest rig or similar load bearing vest that will not interfere with the ruck waist belt being used. That's what makes heavy loads truly manageable without destroying your back. |

I will say this . . . the LBV is a hell of a lot better than the LBE w/ Y syspenders that I used from 1986 to 1992 in the Army and then NG.

Ok, while looking on ebay I found a seller less than 30 miles from my house selling complete alice LBE in lots of 10. I may be posting some of these here in the EE depending on the condition, ie I am pretty sure I am going to buy them, but would only sell the excess if in great shape.
