anyone know the best/cheapest place to find a surefire G2 flashlight?? most prices online run around $36 + S&H, anyone know if Meijers or wal-mart carries them? Also do those lithium batteries really last 10 year like they say they do? Wasent sure if i should buy a few pack of batteries with it or just get them as i needed, probably cheaper if if i buy the 12 pack. thanks for any info!

Walmart sells a light called the Maxfire LE or LX (made by Brinkmann)that is great for $20.  A little bigger than a G2 but with some rubber grips (removeable) and a constant on push button (full click) tailcap.  Comes with 2 crappy CR123's but for $20, not a bad deal.

they usually run $36.  tactical tailor's site has them for $34, granted you have to pay shipping.

to get one locally, check sporting goods stores.  i bought a G2 and a 6P from sportsmans warehouse a while back.  i've seen them at bass pro too.  a few of the mom n' pop shops around here carry surefire products as well.  i haven't seen any at walmart, but i can't honestly say i've looked.

if you get one, stock up on batteries.  these lights will burn through batteries in about an hour.  i have yet to burn out a lamp, but i've gone through plenty of batteries.  it's usually cheaper to get them by the 12 pack, btw.

i wouldn't buy batteries as needed because these batteries will give very little warning when they're going out.  i usually have the light get kind of dim for a few seconds and then it cuts out almost instantly.  it's not like with a maglite where you can tell when it's time to change the batteries.

What you describe is characteristic of all lithium cells.  Their voltage is relatively stable as they discharge and then it suddenly falls off.

Other battery technologies have voltages that fall off gradually as they discharge.

And for the original poster, yes, lithium cells have an incredible shelf life due to the low self-discharge rates.  Everytime I reach for a conventional battery light, the cells are dead.  My lithium lights are always ready when I need them, and I won't use anything else.

As I understand from Surefire distibutors I've talked to, Surefire mandates the retail price on it's products. At the very least, they can not advertise a lower price. Consequently they are ~$34 everywhere.

Calvin at BrightFlashlights in the EE.  He can't advertise his price...  hehe.  Based on his reply to my price request, I see why.  It's not like he's selling them for $20 or anything, but it's sure less than anywhere else I've seen by at least a few bucks.

www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=2&f=142&t=147388 <- His industry section list with contact info.

I've ordered a YHM flash hider from him in the past, and he got it here FAST too.

By the way: Brinkmann Maxfire versus Surefire G2

The Brinkmann still gets good reviews, though:

Surefire G2:
www.flashlightreviews.com/reviews/surefire_g2.htm

I'm about to get the Maxfire and take my chances, though.  I'm low on the dough, you know?    That $16.99 tag at Target and no shipping looks good to college students.

ETA: I just looked at the Maxfire in Target, and it looks like junk!  The holster that comes with it is flea-market garbage with loose single stitches, and everything about it screams "Made in China crap" - from the package itself to the lens.  I think I'll just order the Surefire G2 from Calvin at Brightflashlights.

Sportsman's Warehouse has a full line of Surefire products. Even some Inova and Streamlight items as well.

It's a great light for the price. I have a G2 on my M4gery and a G2Z on my duty belt.

I just bought one of these to keep in the car.  Very close to the G2, to include output.
