I have a bulletproof vest of some sort that I discovered at work. Long story short, while cleaning out a trailer that goes on the back of an 18-wheeler, I found about 20 of these...and no one wanted them, so I got them. They say SafariLand Ballistics Industries, QE-2, Quick Entry Series. It says it was issued in '91 and that it will stop a 9mm__124 grains__Rem-FMJ__1175 FPS velocity, and 357 Mag__158 grains__Win-JSP__1395 FPS velocity. Im trying to find out how good this vest is, and how much it is worth, since i have about 20, I might be able to sell some and buy a nicer one. Any info would be appreciated.

91 issue, hmmm.

Did you try getting ahold of safariland?

I wonder how well they were taken care of, if they got wet it deteriorates the "stopping'ness"

Maybe 25-50 bucks each?

No, I haven't called SafariLand yet. They were left in the back of a trailer, for years...some of them have a couple small holes but thats about it other than being dusty.

I would also be concerned with how they were cared for. Like ggllggll said this can effect stopping ability. If these were worn and placed in the trailor immediatly after use or without proper cleaning and drying I would be concerned about moisture damage and the possibility of them developing mildew or mold on the kevlar under what looks like a non-removable cover.
Unless they were properly stored and something was know about their previous use and/or care I would not trust one to stop a bullet. These vests may be suitable for airsoft use or for training but not for stopping someone depending on it to save your life.
I did some vest testing work back in my police days with one of the large body armor manufactures and vests will stop rounds long aftet their expiration date but only with proper care. Pretty fun to get to shoot up a bunch of vests and see the results first hand.

Im almost 100% sure that they never got wet. But im planning to take atleast one out and shoot it and see how it fairs.

You'll get better results [more accurate that is] if you back the vests up.  Instead of hanging them from a clothes line.  Try stuffing them with rolled up towels or something else hard.

Thanks for the info. I forgot about putting something in between the vest.

hmmm

16 year old vests
Unknown storage conditions
Unknown environmental exposure
Unknown material composition

I suppoose you 'could' shoot one, but the results will not necessarily translate into HOW the others will perform.  Don't expect to get a mint too, by this time trying to sell these for protective value would be MOOT.  You could sell these off, but you may encounter liability if someone downstream decides to be really stupid with this vest.

Im not sure what ya'll think i'm going to use these vests for, but I dont plan to use them on a daily basis....just have them to keep. Kinda like some extra protection during SHTF. I don't have any other bulletproof vests so its not like im going to replace one with this "unproven" vest. And about the price, when I found the vests I was hoping to sell most if not all of them to buy a brand new one. But, I doubt that will happen now. Any more information will be helpful though.

UPDATE

While digging through the vests, I discovered that two were different than the rest. These vests are made by PointBlank, and have removable front and pack panels. These vests are dated January 1991. Any info would be appreciated.

STick a watermelon between the vest. be cool. get it camera pics or vids. otherwise, I dunno about old vests. I wouldnt wear one to save me, but they could be good for ballistic reinforcement of your BOV.

You might be okay if you wear them all at once.

PLEASE POST PICS OF THIS

SEND THEM TO OP!!! I'm sure he'd be more than happy to do a "Old Vests-o-truth" test for ya! just send him like 3 or sumthin, keep the rest!

hm....its tempting. If the vests end up being complete pieces of trash, Ill stack them all together and see what happens. When I test them, I plan to post pics.

Alright, I sent him an email. Hopefully this will turn out well, and maybe he will perform tests on a few of these vests. I appreciate the info ggllggll and die-tryin.

Check out this link from Bulletproofme.com. They state old vests are found to be just as good as new vests - in other words, age doesn't really effect the ballistic protection offered by older vests.  Looks like thier older vests are mostly 5-10 years old though, not 15.

Hopefully the vests will hold up to their standards, but since im not exactly sure what conditions they've been in all bets are off. I talked to OP, and im going to mail him a couple today. Hopefully he'll perform the tets soon so I can tell if all of these vests are good or not.
