I'm doing PSD work in Iraq.  Although I'm loathe to wear a helmet, there are times that I think I need more than a baseball cap to protect my noggin.  Chances are, I'll have to buy the helmet myself.  It seems like the Gallet MICH is the heat, but there's a backlog for civilians and it costs $425.

Does anyone have any other recommendations?  Any input on the RBR or Second Chance helmets?

Level of protection, comfort, price and availability are all factors.

Thanks

The MICH TC2000 is the heat. Lightweight, comfortable, higher ballistic protection than the K-Pot. Worth every penny.

$425? How much is your life worth?

Agreed, but if I have to wait months to get it, what good is it?  Also, if I can get the same level of protection now for $200 less, wouldn't I be better off with that option instead of the MICH?

I've seen MICH helmets sell for cheaper than $425 on Ebay and they are available now.

The Gunfighter is the TC-2002.  They are available from time to time on Ebay.

Apparently SDS also has some pretty good helmets that they are releasing here shortly.  They have similiar ballistic characteristics and will be more readily available than the MICH. At least that's the word around the campfire, but I have no idea when they will be available for purchase.  Ask LF.

I think an RBR with Oregon Aero BLU suspension kit upgrade would be every bit as good as a Mich helmet.

The price might be in the same ballpark though, the RBR helmet stock is far better than PASGT, thought the Mich is better than the RBR.

Good luck getting an Oregon Aero BLU suspension kit, I have heard this is near impossible these days.

I personally own two RBRs, and I am 100% satisfied.  They are lighter and more comfortable than the Kevlar.  Also, if you need a helmet cover, a USGI small will fit; or, Botach has the RBR nylon covers.

Thanks.  I'll probably order one next month.

The RBR F6 rated helmets have the most stringent ballistic testing standards in their category- the HP White Helmet Test Procedure.  If a helmet hasn't gone through this testing, it's usually being touted as an NIJ IIIA level helmet, which is a certification that does not exist for helmets.  I'm curious as to which suspension system is preferred in by other users of both RBR and MICH in extreme heat.  Personally, I find that the RBR (not to be compared to the standard military suspension), has less surface area contacting your melon, and allows for more air to pass between your head and the helmet shell.  If price and availability is a consideration, then there is no comparison between the two.
