I picked up a 590 on a whim, saw it sitting in the rack for $270 and said why not?  I've never owned or handled one but they always seemed to be held in high regard here.

Got it out to shoot today, and it doesn't want to extract.  I'll fire, rack the slide back and I've got a hull in the chamber and another loaded round in the feed tray.  Kind of disappointing.  Seems to happen 2 out of 3 rounds.  If I shoot and rack partially, then close the slide again, hit the release and again rack the slide back, it extracts just fine.

Is this a common problem?  Is there an "o-ring and spring" type extractor upgrade like there is for AR bolts that everyone does?  Or am I opening the slide too fast?  There doesn't appear to be any wear or damage to the extractor hook itself.

See if the chamber is smooth and clean. If so I'd say weak extractor spring unless the claw itself is worn.

Thanks I will check that.  I do have a 500 parts gun laying around if the extractors are the same I might swap them.

You should be able to swap the whole bolt in.

What ammo are you using?

This was Spartan low brass 00 buck and was the only ammunition I tried.

I have a good reason to love Mossberg M500 shotguns - I lost part of my dominant thumb in Afghanistan and the lifter design on the Mossberg enables me to load without the painful pinching of the tender, reconstructed area of my thumb.

That said, I am freaking DONE with Mossberg. The last THREE shotguns I got from them (a 500, 590, and 930) had to go back for failures to eject. They did completely fix them and their customer service was great and easy to deal with, but I have lost all faith in them after this.

Well after comparing to the bolt from my incomplete 500, it's definitely a worn extractor.  The 500s had a nice sharp 90 degree face on the hook side while the 590s angles away from the rim.  I'll swap bolts and give it a try tomorrow.

Was just about to mention check the extractors.  Bought a new 590A1 and it had similar issues.  I had a broken extractor.

Fixed it myself by replacing the extractor claw.  Bought from either Brownells or Midway.

Helpful dissembly video.

Given how narrow the thing is (mine measures .055" x .120" at the narrowest portion where the rim of the shell resides) I can't believe they don't send 3 spares with each gun

My Mossberg 500 is about 40yrs old and well used...the extractors are still fine.
However, about a year ago, I had some failures to eject...
It was caused by the ejector screw backing out. Tightened it up with loctite, and now all is well again.

check out the benelli nova/supernova shotguns, the lifter stays down and out of the way once pushed when loading shells.

FWIW- I had pretty much the same experience with SPARTAN 00Buck in both an 870 and 930SPX. Upon closer examination, I discovered many of the shells were slightly out of round. I think I may have had a case of shells that sat on the bottom course of a pallet for a long time.

Interesting.

I did swap bolts as the extractors are visibly different but I will make sure to try some Federal buck in it when I get the chance.

Just to update, finally got it back to the range today.  It was definitely a worn extractor.  Works 100% after the bolt swap.  Glad I hung onto that pile of parts.

Do yourself a favor and go ahead and pull the ejector screw, check the ejector and than locktite that bastard back in

That's at a minimum the first this with every new to me 500 I deal with.
