I recently picked up a used M4 with a factory full length tube and 3 pos stock.  I shot the gun prior to purchase and ran fine.  I have since purchased the same gun and the gun will NOT chamber a round, it seats about 3/4 of the way into the chamber and then refuses to go any further.  Removed barrel assembly and tried to drop several rounds in the chamber by hand, all stop at roughly the same place.  Looking into the chamber and feeling, there is a definitive "step" in the chamber that appears purposefully machined.  I can not, for the life of me, figure out whats up.  What am I doing wrong here?  I tried six different types of rounds, bird, buck, and slug.  No joy.   Looking for some help.

There is a good possibility that a lead ring has built up from slug shooting and not cleaning the gun properly.
Can you scratch the ring, if so it is lead.

Yep, something is definitely built up in the chamber. Go at it with a 12 ga chamber brush & solvent and see what happens.

Shortly after posting this I started prodding the ring and found out that there was a hull stuck in the chamber.  It appears that a hull separated from the brass and the hull was somewhat welded to the chamber walls.  Took some effort but got it out.  All is well now.

It was a pretty tight fit, looking at it you couldn't tell what it was.  Not until I started prodding it did I realize what it was and what had happened.  Now cycles fine.  All is well.  Thank you for the replies.

Can you determine what type/brand of hull was stuck in there?

Thanks for posting the resolution. I was scratching my head wondering what was wrong.

Surprising.... I was expecting one of the problematic el-cheapo shells

Thanks for the follow up

Could be that the seperated hull was the result of a cut shell.
The shell was cut in an attempt to make a cut shell "slug" not quite being cut enough
Chamber real hot from fireing many rounds shot fired, shell melted into chamber walls and exrtactor pulls off base and leaves hull in chamber.

Seconded. It's a novelty trick and that is a great example of why you should just have the appropriate ammo in the first place. Mix of 1 or 2 slugs and remaining 00 on the saddle never hurt anyone.
