Hello all.  I am working on a S&W Model 1000 20ga and I have run into a problem.  The shotgun was not firing and was having light strikes.  I took it apart, cleaned it and replaced the action spring as well as the hammer spring.

Now that i have put it back together, the lifter and bolt release are both stuck in a "fired" state.  I can see where the lifter engages on the bolt release, but i cannot figure out what the problem is.  The bolt is forward and the hammer is cocked (trigger has not been pulled) but the gun is acting as if it has.  Any help on what the problem is would be greatly appreciated.  I have spent a long time looking at this and trying things, but nothing is working.

What the bolt release is supposed to look like...

What it currently looks like when hammer is cocked and ready to fire, also locking the lifter in place...

Those things always looked like Remington 1100's, but I suspect they share no parts at all.

Correct,  they are very different.  However,  the S&W M1000 is the same as a Mossberg model 1000.

Wait, i used to have one. I think i ran into this once. (ah, crap, let me think)

You took the stock off to replace the spring, right?  Is there a small inlet in the stock, or the retaining plate?  Looks like the letter U.
That relief cut is for the very back end of the spring guide, in an FAL you would call it the "rat tail".
If you re-assembled it even just a touch out of place, or rotated a few degrees, the bolt cannot recoil all the way back. Thus it will not disconnect and reset for the next shot. It might give the symptoms you describe.

It's been a while since i got rid of that gun, i don't remember exactly.  Look at the very back part of the spring guide channel and see if that's it.

There are a great many things that can go wrong with this model, but I believe most of your problems are being caused by the interface (or lack thereof) of the action spring plunger with the "disconnector tab thingy" protruding from the top rear of the trigger group. You will notice with the trigger group removed that it must be pushed forward to allow firing. The action spring plunger is what pushes it forward. If it isn't quite forward enough, it will drag. This can cause light hammer strikes. So can a weak hammer spring, gunk, etc. Replace the action spring if it isn't pushing hard enough. It should have enough force to trip that completely even when the gun is reasonably dirty.

Well thank you both for your replies.  I was very hopeful one of the two would do it, but no dice.

Here is the piece I believe you were talking about at the rear of the trigger group:

It appeared the new spring was engaging on it appropriately.

Where i think the issue is the engagement from this surface:

Onto this surface:

I am just stumped.  The gun has the lifter locked up unless you depress the bolt release, then you can actually load it albeit with difficulty.  Any help would really be appreciated.

Yeah, those are the pieces I was referring to.

Hmm... Is there any way you could post a video? It's been a while since I looked at one.
