I bought a Mossberg 535 in early 2008. Just a plain "all purpose" 535, no special barrel or anything. The manual that came with the gun states that the ammo capacity is 4+1. However, a guy I shoot with sometimes has a newer "all purpose" model with the brown furniture - bought in the last year or so, roughly - and his manual states his gun is 5+1. The guns appear to be identical except maybe for the front sight bead (I'd have to check on that again, they may be the same as well).

Now, my gun will easily accept a fifth 2 3/4 inch shell, I don't have to force it or anything. This makes me wonder about the actual capacity of my gun and hence my question: does anyone have any idea if my somewhat older gun is intrinsically different than the newer 535s, or, are the magazines on these things actually all the same?

Oh, and I took the stupid dowel out of the mag when I bought the gun, so it has nothing to do with that.

Can I put a fifth shell in or will it turn my gauge into some sort of lethal time bomb death trap?

I believe they were using round count with longer shells before now I think they use the 2 3/4" count
