| Just got a Mossberg Maverick 88 youth model 20ga shotgun for the daughter to use during duck season. Went to check all the mechanical functions and found that I couldn't get a shell in the tube. I took the plug out and found that it's 13 3/8" long and since this is a five shot capacity tube it runs about the whole length. Obviously this is an easy fix but has anyone else ever heard of this happening? |

Yes, I've seen some youth pump and semi-auto models that start out as 1 shot capacity and give you the ability (by shortening the plug) to add shell capacity as the kids learn to safely handle the gun. Keeps them from blasting 3 shells every time they shoot too.

I used to have a Mossberg 500 Bantam 20 gauge. It too had a plug with a length that made it a single shot. These are "youth" shotguns and all of the above posters are correct: it's an intentional safety feature for youth shooters. You just trim it as their competency / attention to detail grows.
The Maverick 88 manual doesn't address it (probably because the "youth" model 88s are a fairly recent offering), but it's found in the manual for the Mossberg 500 (see the sixth page of the .pdf): http://www.mossberg.com/manuals/500_835_590_535_en.pdf |
