I'm curious... why is the new-ish Remington Versa Max gas operated semi auto shotgun so expensive?  The Mossberg 930, Rem 11-87, and others can be had for half the cost.  I look at the eploded drawing, it does not look that much more complex.

I'll go out on a limb here and say that probably because it is designed to compete with the waterfowl Benelli style guns in method of operation.  Looking at the more expensive versions, the controls and basic features all mimic a Benelli.  The insides are coated, nickel I believe, instead of just blued steel like the 11-87 sportsman.  The carbon steel parts are nitride coated instead of bead blast blue or even parkerizing.  The Mossberg and 11-87 all come standard with a different style flat rib too that is cheaper to make.  If I recall, the trigger guard and normally polymer parts on other guns are metal on the Versa Max.  The stock with the soft touch areas is some kind of an attempted parallel to a comfortech Benelli stock.  It has a threaded fiber optic bead instead of a press fit, bead blasted piece of steel.

While not a nickel coated engraved receiver gun with lots of engraving, it just has some things going for it that the lower end Remington doesn't have.

The Versa Max sportsman is a stripped down version that can be had at about $100 more than an 11-87 Sportsman if you value shop.  It of course lacks some of the aforementioned features.

Well the 11-87 was discontinued so it would not compete with the versamax. I would guess it's more expensive because the parts just cost more to make and coat, plus they are trying to compete with the Beretta/Benelli crowd.

Because it works much better than the cheaper guns you mentioned. Worth the price IMHO (I have two VMs and two 11-87s).

That may very well be true, IF you need what it brings to the table.  For me and my uses the extra money doesn't give me anything that my 1100 doesn't already do just fine....  But that's just me and my tastes, budget, and wants/needs.

It's like with so many things, sometimes more money gets you more.  Sometimes it doesn't.  And sometimes you have to ask yourself, do I NEED more or am I just wanting it so I can say that I have "more"?

Agreed - this is true of anything in life. This is why many product manufacturers try to price their wares based on VALUE delivered to the customer, rather than a simple "cost-plus" calculation. For me the VM has proved to be significantly more reliable with a lot less maintenance than my 11-87s. For my application (3-Gun) this brings huge value that I am willing to pay for. For folks who place less of a premium on reliability under adverse conditions, there are indeed many cheaper shotguns out there.
